Now the only "Macross thing" I haven't seen is Macross II.

Should I watch it for completeness, or is it really shitty and irrelevant enough to skip?

Macross II was never retconned, it's simply not part of Kawamori's Macross timeline. It exists in its own timeline along with DYRL and a couple of early '90s Macross video games.

Check it out, it's only 6 episodes/1 movie. You can watch it all in one sitting.

It's not shit, it's just not great and contradicted the direction Kawamori wanted to go in. It's worth watching for it's own sake I think, especially since it's so short. Just don't expect to be left wow'd.

I enjoyed Macross II. It's a bit different, but if you don't try to think of the Macross continuity while watching it, it's pretty solid on its own.

It isn't the greatest Macross, it kind of felt rushed imo. If you have some free time to burn, you might as well go watch it.

Macross continuity is a bit fucked anyways considering that both DYRL and SDF Macross are supposed to be in canon at the same time. One being a movie retelling of the other or something. It's generally not worth bothering about, but then I don't think it is with most franchises even when it's cut & dry.
