I don't understand the plot of this anime.

The first 3 episodes still don't make sense on a rewatch, and Prof Saotome's actions and motives remain unclear. The world turning into a barren wasteland when saturated with Getter energy doesn't make sense too when it did the precise opposite before.

Gou and Kei uniting in order to make the Shin Dragon do..something which isn't really explained bugs me too.

Yes I know they switched directors.

Basically, memories.

The Getter beam fired by humans also contain their memories, that's why human's Getter ray can save shit.

While Invader's Getter are mere parasites, they don't have memories, therefore their Getter Ray is fucking malevolent and uncontrollable.

It was mainly the stuff with Saotome that got unresolved. What was he doing in the first place with Hayato, Cohen and Stinger, why did Hayato kill him, what did Genki see that made him like that, what's up with Michiru's death and what does he know, there were quite a few myteries. Most of these either got explained with "the Invaders did it" or just forgotten.

I can make sense out of some of these.
- Why Hayato kills Saotome: Because Saotome feared that the Invader would overwhelm his will so he made a deal with Hayato to kill him for himself (though, the Invader still revives him)
>what's up with Michiru's death: Basically, both Michiru and Saotome were infested with Invader when they interact too much with Getter, Michiru's outburst happened suddenly and she chose death to bring the parasite down with her.
>what does he know: The whole memories thing above, and he stays with the Invader as a double agent so he can know more about Getter by the Invader, as evidence in the Stoner Sunshine event.

Those are more speculations than actual facts though.

Nah, Getter is actually alien in origin.

I think it was shown that Genki saw dead Michiru with invader contamination (Saotome showed him/her) and thus turned autistic from the trauma. other things are left to speculation (thanks to the classic Imagawa lines of "I understand now!!! what really happened was...! what really happened was...!!!!"SAY IT ALREADY DAMMIT!!!)

I thought the Saotome in pre and post apocalyptic were two different entities. Saotome only began to get back to his senses when Ryoma blasted him with the Stoner Sunshine.

I totally forgot about that part, it even has Genki discover Ryohma with the gun that killed Saotome (poor kid, as if he/she had not seen enough already...). the whole scene is quite a mess, Hayato is supposed to kill the doctor with a gun, but he leaves it there and attack Ryohma with his knives (which he's supposed to favor) out of some unexplained blood-thirsty state of mind, then flies away in an UFO... I would like to hear Imagawa's original explanation for all this (Hayato joining some aliens?)

after the change of director and thus change of plot, the only explanation close enough to something logical I can think of is that, since they were investigating lots of alien stuff, it's not impossible for them to have access to some kind of UFO or a ship with such movement capabilities (shin getter can move that way, actually). the only reason why Ryohma would be surprised would be that he simply didn't know about it (Hayato has always been the smart one of the team, it's to be expected that the doctor would tell more stuff to him than the others). it could also be something provided by the other crazy doctor he is allied with (if he managed to make a flying fortress... who knows?)

Let me try to piece it together

-After Invader Wars Michiru gets impregnated with invader shit so she kills herself

-Saotome discovers and does an autopsy to show Genki which turns her full retard

-Hayato and Saotome made a deal to combat the Invaders by separating the Getter Team, Ryoma goes to jail, Saotome presumably dies, Hayato rides a UFO and Musashi and Benkei become bros

-Saotome comes back, he tries to fight the Invaders by making three entities, 'Go' who's basically a mixture of Michiru and Saotome (incest), Hayato clone and Ryoma clone.

-Also builds the Shin Dragon and Shin Getter Robo, but Shin Dragon goes berserk because its not finished evolving

-Invaders nuke the Earth, Japan goes into hiding and Hayato and the other Doctor commands the Robot Army

It's one part the directors switched
One part, as Imagawa tells it, he took his notes with him on where the rest of the series was supposed to go, so Kawagoe was basically going in half-cocked.

As a result, he basically just pieced together the rest from several Getter mangas (the barren wasteland and Shin teams culled from Go, the final duel with Saotome being an almost tit-for-tat replay of the Getter vs Getter G fight from Shin, etc...)

Also re - Michiru
One gets the impression there was more to it than simply 'Invader infection', given the flashbacks featuring Cohen and Stinger suggest her infection was part of a larger agenda.

Kawagoe only directed episodes 4 and 5, which kind of explains why these two episodes were kind of weak compared to the rest of the series.

The partnership between Saotome, Cohen and Stinger didn't make much sense to me either, so let me speculate:

It could be that Saotome initially had no idea they were themselves Invaders. They might have been one of the first examples of Invaders in human form that could carry the masquerade for long periods of time. The infection of Michiru may have been their attempt to coopt the Getter Team entirely, subverting their primary opposition.

My guess is that, upon learning of the plot after the accident, Saotome staged his own demise by conspiring with Hayato, so that he could complete Shin Dragon in secret. Note how Stinger and Cohen are both opposed to Saotome when he first 'revived', it is more likely that Invader-Saotome came after the bomb detonated, and the Invaders resurrected him.

The UFOwas clearly supposed to be either Shin Getter, or just the Shin Jaguar ship. Movement is identical to the Shin Shine Spark in SRW Alpha 3, and with Shin Getter's flight pattern in later episodes.

Sekai Saigo no Hi will always depress me, because the show could have been amazing given the amount of plot Imagawa clearly was laying down. Instead of a new Giant Robo style reveal, we got a mediocre latter half punctuated by some cool fights.

As far as he tells it at any rate, what we got WAS completely different from the finished product (unless he was trolling GunOta when they asked him, which is unlikely. The Japanese will mess around, but they don't tend to outright lie in interviews often.)

Hayato didn’t really kill Saotome he faked it so he could get blood from Ryoma (why he didn’t explain everything up front is another matter). Genki saw her sisters mutilated body and then thought the her dads friend had killed him in cold blood when she was like 10, you’d be pretty messed up too.

Saotome got Hayato to fake his death, cause the Prof. had figured out the UN was invaderised and they killed Michiru.
He did that so he could complete Gou and Shin Dragon secretly.
But Cohen and Stinger got wise to it and sent the invaders and got the UN to send Ryouma to kill him.
Gou was just one of 3 needed to make Shin Getter and Dragon go all awesome and such, but the other two got corrupted and tried to kill everything. In either case it wouldn't have worked as you need hot-blood, etc. to make Getter Rays work properly.
At this point, Saotome was against the invaders, and was trying to permanently get rid of them.
It wasn't until they had killed him and taken his body that his plan sort of backfired.
That is why after getting Stoner Sunshined he attempts to keep the invaders in his body.
