Hey /m/, two questions about weapons in Gundam.

1. Why do Zakus have heat hawks at the beginning of MSG? It doesn't really make sense to equip mobile suits with melee weapons if the enemy doesn't even have any mobile suits. Is there some other reason why they have them?

2. Also, the OYW seemed to prove the overwhelming superiority of mobile suits equipped with beam weaponry over those ballistic weaponry. Hell, the Earth Federation equipped even equipped all of their mass produced GMs with beam spray guns. So then why do so many mobile suits (especially feddie suits) during 0083 go into battle armed with ballistic machine guns?

1. They were preparing for the inevitability that the EF would make MS, what with them being the best weapon ever and all.
2. No E-CAPs yet in 0083 I think, lack of reloading could be a bitch. Plus they had shitloads of MGs in stock, may as well use them, especially when you've got to try and rebuild a decimated military and world, can't exactly pimp out every unit with the latest and greatest. And high rate of fire can be handy.

Beam Weapons dissipate faster in Earth's Atmosphere , and the beam spray gun has notoriously short range as is, my guess is it's effective range on Earth is so impractically short that their better off with Ballistics weapons. In addition, untill 0087 beam weapons must be recharged at a base or warship, and cannot be reloaded. Given the rarity of battleships on Earth as compared to space it would be reloading difficult. Finally, although not supported in any anime, i have a theory as to why ballistic bazookas are availble as late as Char's Counter Attack and beyond, even when beam rifles are common place. It is my guess that since rockets have "Splash damage" they are more useful in some situations. For example, if you hit an enemy MS in the shoulder with a Beam Rifle it'll lose an arm, but will still be perfectly capable of fighting, if you make the same shot with a Bazooka you'd likely destroy the suits entire upper torso.

Why principality of zeon leaked photos of their prototype zaku to the federation (which they laughed at), I believe this was intended to be iether a feint or intimidation. With the discovery of monovski particle radar was then rendered useless. This meant close range melée combat on the battle field would soon become a reality once again. And as history has shown us, if one country develops a weapon others will soon follow, iether out of need to match the opponents streangth or to show they have the same abilities, if not better. Also the heat hawks could be used as a tool rather than a weapon. If you need to clear a path, cut something open/off ect. All without wasting preciouse amunition or explosives.
The other answer. Scientists showing off. That's one thing zeon scientist were known for. Look at all the mobile armors that the principality has. That is the result of multiple inventors wanting their creations to be the one that won the war. In other words, “ok so u made a big gun. Look what I made, an axe stat cuts thru steel bitches!" this is what ultimately let the zeon to a loss. All their resorces and time wasted making so many prototypes.

Big Trays and Pegasus Class Ships are still a rarity compared to Salamis and Megellans. Hell, after the One Year One we don't see a single Land Battleship.

Ah, now that makes sense. I also guess that a heat hawk would have more uses outside of melee combat than a a beam saber.

The Federation is notorious for cost cutting, esp. after the One Year War, although, with the exception of the Doga series, Beam Machine Guns aren't too common within Zeon either, the most common grunt suit of Neo Zeon, the Gaza series, used Knuckle Busters (But they weren't too shabby either, their output was incredible, esp. for a grunt suit.)

I don't recall seeing fleets of them anywhere.
If anything they served more as mobile HQs than actual battleships.

1. Carving up things that lack melee weapons of their own, like Federation battleships and Balls. If you have to get close enough to see the enemy anyway, and they lack CIWS that can dent Zaku armor, you might as well close in the extra few hundred meters to hit them with an axe and get inside the range of their main guns. And of course, mobile suits can't really carry that much ammunition, so better to just carve things up than unload your entire stock of 100mm shells or rockets into one Magellan and have to return to base. Also, it might be worth noting that Zeon's first-generation MS, the Zaku I, lacked melee weapons entirely - heat weapons were introduced with the Zaku II.

2. The Zeon suits are easily explain by Delaz not really having any resources besides the OYW survivors he managed to round up, after most of Zeon's best equipment was destroyed or captured at A Baoa Qu. As for the GMs, aside from 0083 being chock full of anachronisms, it might have been due to the Federation's general lack of organization, or the fact that the Immortal Fourth's customized machine guns were more reliable, accurate, and had longer effective range than the cheaply, quickly-made Beam Spray Guns the initial production-type GMs were rolled out with, and they were still dealing with wimpy steel armor on most of their opposition instead of lunar titanium. Still, you'd think they could have spared some proper Beam Rifles...

Zaku I was basically re-purposed colony construction equipment. a internally heated cutting tool would have been useful to cut metal in space for the colonies. Thus -I think- the heat hawk is a redesigned version of that tool. I don't know, makes sense to me
