I am entirely new to Gundam related videogames. Which ones do you recommend? I've been looking at Gundam Federation vs. Zeon recently, and it seems interesting enough. Is it worth it? Is there another Gundam game of a similar style which I'd be better off with?

The certifiably biggest of all Zams is of course related.

Gundam vs Zeta Gundam is preferable to FvsZ because it has the same core gameplay, but goes into Zeta Gundam. Other games are Zeonic Front, and Encounters in Space. Sould probably stay away from Journey to Jaburo.

Stay away from Journey to Jaburo. Game is awful. Federation vs Zeon is fun, especially if you like playing as a grunt. ZvG is even better if you get past the English dubbing. Also; first debut of ZZ in North America.

Encounters in Space is incredible for what you can find it for.

These games aren't really the most story based in the world, the main reason i say to get GvZG is because it gives you way more suits to play with, and a more interesting single player in my opinion.

Does this actually encompass everything in FvsZ, making buying both pretty much redundant?

F vs Z has a different campaign, but, aside from that, yes, G vs ZG has all the content from the first game.

I picked up both Zeonic Front and Federation vs. Zeon, and I've enjoyed the fuck out of both. Zeonic Front is basically Rainbow Six with Zakus, while FvsZ and apparently GvsZG also are more arcade action games.

Right. Well, as said, storyline isn't a huge draw, so missing a campaign isn't a big loss. I'll pick up G vs GZ instead then.

Oh, and one more thing, does the Big Zam appear at all in either? Less likely for the later, but as said, everything from the first appears in the second. Easily my favorite machine in the series.

It appears and is playable quite a few more times in the GvsZG campaign with Dozle. It kind of sucks though. At least there's a scenario where they're mass produced.

Don't even bother looking up Zeta's Story by the way, G vs ZG has a rather unique campaign. It shows a time line, and as you beat missions the timeline branches off into alternate scenerios. At first their minor variations, such as "What if Garma lived", but latter they start getting really wierd, like "What if AEUG was never formed, and Axis was stronger, and all the Zeon aces from the original Gundam lived, and they fought the Titans." It's a cool concept, but they could have done a hell of a lot more with it, still a fun game though.

EiS is pretty fun.

For my money Battle Assault 2 is a really fun game. It's basically a knock-off of Capcom's VS 2d fighters. Has a big roster (with a few spares via gameshark), too. Not what you'd consider a "tournament grade" fighter, as a Byg Zam is going to kick a Ball's ass pretty much any time. But for a game to play with friends you can say "dude, don't be an ass, stop spamming Psycho mkIII" it's one of my favorites. The controls are a _little_ wonky as it's things like "down->forward->attack" rather than the proper quarter-circle. But it's still a lot more accessible than the average Gundam game to fight your buddies with.

You can still use the traditional fighting game stuff and pull things off.

MS Saga: A New Dawn

Its a multi century (universal, alternate, future, SD) Gundam RPG with customizable and interchangeable parts lots of game play, a decent storyline that never really slaps you in the face, it has random battles but it also has purchasable items that lessen or remove them for X amount of time. It was for the ps2 and you might have some trouble finding it, but I recently pulled a torrent off of Piratebay for PCsx2 (I had it for PS2 years ago but foolishly sold it)
Its actually one of my favorite games to the point that I spent 3 months search for a torrent after spending 5 months searching locally.

Does Zoids Legacy have the robot customizing?

Because that was the greatest thing about MS Saga. It was fun and simple, yet always made for some silly looking designs. You could even come off with some really cool looking mixtures, too.

To an extent. No part swapping, though. Basically there were inbuilt weapons and stats you could pay to upgrade, and then weapons you could purchase and mount to different slots. You obtained new Zoid blueprints through either using this one skill on enemies you found, random chance after killing enemies, or in chests. Each Zoid would then need to be bought using the right parts and money at these labs scattered through the world. It's by no means a complex game, but I still found it fairly fun.

The character designer was Akira Yasuda. If you're not familiar with his work, he's responsible for the character designs of Turn A Gundam and the mechanical designs of Overman King Gainer.

I have no idea why he got so crazy on this one. Some of the designs were really awkward and it was made worse by them totally clashing with the overly bland generic NPCs.

Well, MS Saga was designed around attracting new fans to the series, but I don't think that excuses the dizzyingly gaudy skeet in the eye that is the character design in this game

Well, damn. The only character I really problems was how Trush/Tristian's eyes were two different colors and didn't really play any importance (Would've made it more bearable) and Fritz. God damn Fritz.

I didnt say it was good, I said two things:
1) The plot never slapped you in the face
2) Japan has put out a lot of terrible games and anime alongside the ones that get treated like theyre a gift from the heavens.
In the 20+ years Ive been watching anime and gaming there have been times when a game was so good it made me cry and many more times when i didnt have enough faces or palms

Im sorry, the game does have a "that guy" and it is fritz, but you can tune him out after the first playthrough if you treat the game like it is: A giant-robots-kill-things simulator, I formally apologize for any mmentary pain he'll cause you until halfway through the game when he isnt important anymore
