Waiting for Godot/Turn-A

Okay, so how long ago was it announced that Turn-A was being licensed by Bandai Entertainment?

A Turn-A Boxset would probably one of the single, few DVDs I actually await a release for and pay retail price. I don't believe more details have been announced, nor have DVDs even been announced at all, but is there a generally implied amount of time before DVDs show up?

And you know...I actually WOULD be interested in a dub, even though I love Romi Park's performance.

I think I'd cream my pants once an episode if I could get such a thing. Unfortunately even if it was released in America it probably wouldn't make it to Europe.

Well, I kind of implied a DVD/BD set of any kind. I don't specifically mean just DVD. A BD set would be all kinds of HNNNNG. I wouldn't mind paying even twenty extra dollars for a BD boxset. Potentially.

I don't think they've even mentioned a timeframe for Turn A. I know when they announced the dual audio 0079 sets they said sometime in 2011, and then more recently summer 2011. But I don't think they said 2011 for Turn A at all.

I got sick of waiting myself honestly and just watched EG's release. Still plan on grabbing the DVDs whenever they do show up though.

Yeah, I'm a fan of the show. One of my top favorite tv shows. That's why I will be buying the DVD set. I've only ever bought a new, unwatched show at retail ONCE. For Ergo Proxy. Even then I had a forty-dollar gift card. (Actually I haven't watched Ergo Proxy yet. Been there for like two years, still in wrap on my shelf. I should watch it this summer.)

I'm just hoping we get news of Turn-A DVD/BD by the end of the year.

There definitely won't be an english BD release.

As for Japanese BD that probably won't be for a few years atleast either, since the memorial dvd sets just came out not that long ago IIRC. They'll want to get as much out of those as they can before releasing BDs.

I was at Sakuracon in Seattle last weekend and talked to a few Bandai reps and they said that there were no plans for a Turn-A dub. I tried to clairify by asking if that was as far as they or anyone at Bandai NA knew and was told "No, there simply aren't any plans for a dub; there's no point really".

That conclusion made me sad. Pic not related but still /m/.

So if they aren't wasting time on a dub, why the fuck is this taking so long? Besides, a dub could be good for this, its probably one of the more accessible Gundam series despite its length.

CN hasn't run a Gundam series since SEED was sentenced to schedule Hell and died in exile.

SyFy's run of 00, meanwhile went...allright, but definitely not as smoothly as the old CN runs did. Not to mention Turn A's pace might not be in line with what SyFy has in mind for anime.

In fact, how many networks WOULD look at Turn A and go "We can get a good audience with this?"

No one. The look of the main suit along with the slow pace and lack of action in some episodes would kill it and execs know it. They're right for once and it's really too bad. Great show, but not for everyone by a long shot.

I guess you're right. I just remember that Monster got run despite its pace and length and thought maybe a channel or two might run this. Oh well, at least with Turn A we will have a better chance of having the whole thing released on DVD.

With all respect for both shows, I'd say Monster worked out a bit better since

a) The manga had been over here for a while and actually garnered quite a bit of praise
b) Compared to Turn A, Monster is still relatively faster paced. There's a couple of occasional diversions, but they're also much quicker to get the story proper under way compared to Turn A.

Then again, considering Viz pulled the plug on putting the rest of the DVDs out for the show, even Monster wasn't apparently a rousing success.

You know, it's getting to the point where fans won't buy longer series until they're completed, and since nobody buys them they don't finish them. What we really need is one of the publishers over here to try a Kickstarter-like approach. List how much money they need to complete it and people can donate/prepurchase to help them get the money. You donate $5, hey great, higher stuff gets you stuff back (1 disc, three discs, 5 discs, whole thing, whole thing in a fancy box, etc), maybe your in the production credits or bonus artwork or some such shit for donation levels beyond typical profit margins for the complete product.
It would allow them to gauge market interest as opposed to just audience interest, and with how damned long contract deals seem to take with Japan, they'd probably even be able to get a decent outlook before anything was even signed and finalized, thus wasting no money if not enough fans show interest in purchasing and not alienating future potential buyers due to a stigma of not completing things.

Actually, I'm pretty disappointed in how little classic anime comes out on BD. There's a ton of classic movies I'm still waiting for.

I remember that's how ANimeigo originally released Macross. Took paid preorders, had enough to do it, and released the boxset to those who preordered, and then sent to store little three disc boxsets for people to purchase as they came out.
But in this day of fansubbing, it's kind of pointless. These days, I'm just waiting for a Steam like service to come along where I can purchase HD quality movies via.

Then if they don't try and change the business model, they really need to stop bitching when people just grab fansubs instead of legitimate releases. I never knew AnimEigo did that, then again they seem to be a little more customer oriented than other companies. If they're losing a license they let you know months in advance; thanks to their heads-up I was able to grab the rest of Urusei Yatsura that I needed, including the movie box with space for the movie they didn't get the license to.

They have changed the business model. See Crunchyroll, showing fan sub releases, what, a day after they air in Japan? The only reason I don't use it is because I have my comp hooked up to a 65 in. HDTV. Streams looks like Super Nintendo games on it. If they started releasing 720 or 1080 releases, I'd give them my money.

No, a new business model has been created. CR and the other streaming sites with fast translations do not appeal to the market (people willing to throw money at them for product), they appeal to the audience (people who want to consume said product as easily and effortless as possible). They have found a way to monetize the audience through ads and subscriptions, but ultimately the market can provide more money.
If physical releases have to go preorder only and then a higher print-on-demand price once those run out, so be it. People who want to *own* something instead of simply renting it via a digital service (and really, that's all you're getting 90% of the time - you lose your account for whatever reason, you lose your "purchases") are already willing to go to the secondary market and its inherent price markups. Last discs of Kimagure Orange Road? Maisson Ikokku? Dunbine (or was it Xabungle)? All ridiculous. Yet people will hunt these down even though there are direct DVD rips and (in many cases for older series) superior quality fansubs all over the internet.

Bringing OOP or low print manga into this shows how POD would help: random volume of a long running series goes OOP, what do you do? Ignore it? Scour Amazon for a copy at $80, $120, $200? Hope to god you find it at a con? Email the licensor and hope they will sell you a copy they might have just lying around (worked for me when I emailed Viz about Basra v20 being $180)? I don't know, and you know why? Because nobody (outside of Tokyopop from what I can find) has tried it; Tokyopop being a poor example as-is due to their current situation being seemingly caused more by CEO shenanigans than business model issues. Hell, with how secretive the companies are, the only way to find out if something is selling well is if it finishes (Firefighter Daigo and that Takahashi short collection being exceptions selling under 100 per volume).
