Losing a sibling is pretty traumatic. The only thing more traumatic would be losing a child.

Siblings are (ideally) always there to support you, and you grew up with them, so that makes it harder to cope with.

It's more dramatic, basically.

Basically when they're brother and sister, it's the older brother that's a villain. In addition to this comic, see also that chick from Dragonar, Erica, and for the one exception Duke Fleed's little sister. And that's just in one SRW.

SRWJ, as mentioned, is all about brother vs. brother. Tekkaman Blade, G Gundam, Eiji and Gale (almost), Voltes V, and then there's the outright familial clusterfuck that is Brain Power'd and the "childhood BFFs fighting each other" from Full Metal Panic and SEED.

Family conflict and tragedy are fairly common ground in fiction.

You mean to tell me you've never seen/read any of the following:
-Star Wars
-The works of William Shakespeare
-Star Trek: The Next Generation (Data and Lore. and with regards to next person addressing, I seem to recall Lore was technically the younger brother.)
-some iterations of the Arthurian legend (they really seem to go back and forth on whether or not Mordred was Arthur's relative or not.)

This is pretty basic fictional conceits right here.

I have 3 brothers, we're all within two years of each other.
Sibling tragedy shit hits me hard.
Went to a classmate's funeral where his older brother gave a eulogy.
I was holding back tears even though I barely talked to this classmate, cause his brother was trying so hard to hold the tears back and barely succeeding.
Fuck, I'm feeling a tear...

From the general standpoint of most animu writers, it's a growing up thing.

Putting the 'wrong' in the older sibling means the younger can't count on them for support, and so they have to learn to grow up and be their own person (and maybe even bring their sibling back.)

When you invert it, the character is suddenly responsible for having to set their misguided younger sibling right. Which is still sometimes done, but not as frequent in central protags.
