i kind of disagree with your professor... I think the best way to get into jazz is simply to download a bunch of the stuff posted in threads like these and just kind of listen to it based on what looks interesting.
Find something that you really love and then go from there finding similar stuff or just things with some similar aspects. i'm always happy to help with recommendations.

I'd probably consider these the most essential bebop recordings. Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, and Max Roach are on most of these tracks. Monk is on a few and Miles is on a some too.
