A stricken tanker truck that belched smoke and flames on the inner loop of the Capital Beltway brought traffic to a standstill in both directions near Telegraph Road in Northern Virginia shortly before 10 a.m. as fire engines and other emergency vehicles responded to the scene.
The tires of the tanker appear to have caught fire, but the situation is under control, said Virginia State Police.
Firefighters appeared to have the flames under control quickly, and traffic was beginning to move on the outer loop of the Beltway by 10:30 a.m. By about 11 a.m., some lanes were starting to open up on the inner loop as well, WTOP radio reported.
