excellent question. the answer is that the modern republican party has always been controlled by mainline, secular east or west coast republicans. these are pretty secular guys (Goldwater, Nixon, Reagan) who just want to tear the government up, pollute the environment and lower taxes cutting services for the poor.

The problem was that by themselves, they didn't have the numbers to make for a respectable political party. Think of Ron Paul supporters. So these Republicans embarked on the Southern Strategy, appealing to people's fears about race, war, guns, gays, and God. A whole grab bag of fear for people to latch onto.

It all worked out for a while. The mindless sheep supporting the republicans and forming the backbone of a political party.

Bush I&II cam along and threw a wrench in the machine. Bush II even said his favorite person was Jesus. So now the evangelicals, which make up like half the republican party, see no problem with electing a Bible School dropout into the presidency. If McCain loses this year, expect another version of Huckabee in 2012.

At this point it's about leverage. A VP spot or high cabinet position maybe. Or, should McCain get trounced this year, in 2012 he can run again this time with some name recognition behind him.
