so.... an American soldier, whose entire military training consists of "YOU WILL NOT THINK SOLDIER! YOU WILL KILL THE EYE-WRACK-EE SCUMBAGS BECAUSE I TELL YOU TOO!" is left on duty in the middle of a warzone despite having gone for two days without sleep, then he shoots some dumbass who sneaks up on them while they're asleep in a secret hiding place.... And he gets court-marshalled. That's fucked up. He was just doing what he was trained to do, when he was too tired to think straight. Around this time was when we both discovered oil in the middle east and the automobile was starting to look to be a big industry.

>Also, Christianity invented martyrdom. Blame Jesus for this whole ordeal if you want to blame anyone. Here's a great passage from Dan Simmons: In The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal Lector tips off young FBI agent trainee Clarisse Starling (Jodie Foster) on how to find the serial killer Buffalo Bill ("he likes to skin his humps") by whispering to Starling—"What do we covet most, Agent Starling? We covet that with which we are familiar. We covet that which we see." And indeed, the murderer had lived next door to his first victim. In our more prosaic intellectual life, we tend to hate and attack first that with which we are most familiar. When the topic in the April Message was the great danger of the Universal Will to Believe as focused in a fantasy-ideology, a transformative belief that will—must—use other human beings as mere props in their transformative fantasies, dozens of people responded with near-rabid attacks on Christianity. The impulse is common…but it is also puerile and calumnious.
Super Nazi Chink !3GqYIJ3Obs
>>674839 Sam Harris’s purpose in The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason is to spare no fantasy-ideology, to excuse no faith revealed by Holy Books or revelation…he states quite baldly that the time for allowing large groups to make extraordinary claims on the nature of reality without putting forth extraordinary evidence is over, that groups’ permission to base their ideological or religious lives on fantasy and claims to divine authority can no longer be acceptable to a planet that must return to some foundation of reason if we are to surive. Such fantasy-ideology or fantasy-religion claims must not be the last word on behavior in a time of easily obtained nuclear bombs, homegrown bioweapons, and other weapons of mass destruction. Minimal planetary and species’ hygiene demands that we outgrow our primitive addiction to transformative beliefs and magic, no matter how pleasing and empowering such Universal Will to Believe has been over the course of our species’ sad history.
But to compare 21st Century Christianity around the world to the realities of radical and militant Islam, as dozens did on our forum and elsewhere, or to compare President George W. Bush to Iran’s President Ahmadenijad—to say that "Bush is worse" because of his Christian faith—is insane.
Super Nazi Chink !3GqYIJ3Obs
>>674843 Even while saying that the time for religious fundamentalism is over everywhere, that it is a luxury we can no longer afford, Sam Harris acknowledges that Christianity has so incorporated tolerance into its faith and practice that the religion has become almost synonymous with tolerance. Perhaps more importantly, Christianity and humanist Enlightenment have been in a long, co-evolutionary spiral for so many centuries now that in most cases in Christian and post-Christian societies and in their institutions—science, free press, the courts, education systems, political systems—the secular and the religious remain essentially separate yet supportive.
Christianity remains a "transformative belief," but the transformation—as in the case of President George W. Bush, so frequently mocked by the sophisticated—is a private and internal transformation. It tends to breed more tolerance, not less. And I’ve been informed on good authority that even the strongest transformational-belief element in Christian theology required the blood of only one martyr—and that he was crucified long ago.
In America, still a "Protestant Christian nation" in a way that brings down the scorn and contempt of so many citizens of post-Christian Europe, even the most fundamentalist or evangelical Christian lives and works in a modern, scientific, secular society with little conflict. A born-again Christian not only can be a lawyer in perfectly secular courts, take his or her entertainment from secular sources, spend his workdays and social evenings comfortably with people from other (or no) faiths, and can marry outside the faith, but also can work as a NASA scientist or help others as a social worker or vote for politicians of other (or no) faiths without fear of losing his soul.
Super Nazi Chink !3GqYIJ3Obs
>>674849 Those who equate Christian fundamentalism with Islamic fundamentalism choose to ignore that when a tsunami hits Indonesia or an earthquake ravages Muslim Pakistan, it is Christian charities that are often the first to respond. And no one need convert or submit to proselytizing to receive such help. And unlike Hamas or Hezbollah, which also include charities among their lists of organizations, Christian churches and relief agencies do not fund or carry out terrorism. Helping others, not jihad or suicide bombing, is hardwired into all modern Christian thought.
There is no reason that most of you reading this should have read my stories and novels, nor that you should know my stand on religion, but for the latter I could quote John Updike in "The Music School" when a character says—"I am neither musical nor religious. Each moment I live I must press my fingers down without confidence of hearing a chord."
To state it more simply when it comes to religion—or the belief in supernatural in any form—I agree with Groucho Marx and Woody Allen when they say, "I wouldn’t belong to any club that would have me as a member."
Super Nazi Chink !3GqYIJ3Obs
Quoted By:
>>674853 As for my writing, most of you reading this wouldn’t know that in my concern about UWTB fantasy-ideologies gaining temporal power, I have almost always followed the Hannibal Lector Dictum and focused on Christianity as the possible villain in my speculative fiction scenarios, ranging from such little-known short works as "Vexed to Nightmare by a Rocking Cradle" to "Vanni Fucci is Alive and Well and Living in Hell" to longer forms of exploring concerns about an institution like the Catholic Church controlling literal resurrection—and thus all of us—in my Hyperion and Endymion novels.
But for all that caution—in my fiction and in my philosophy—I know that to equate modern Christianity to the worldwide violence arising in and around modern Islam is not only unfair but pathological. It is carrying the game of "moral equivalence" to immoral lengths of absurdity.
Finally, to equate America’s President Bush to Iran’s President Ahmadenijad—an extreme Muslim fantasy-transformative Mahdi fundamentalist who, in recent months, has denied the existence of the Holocaust, called for the destruction of Israel by nuclear fire, threatened Europe and the West with annihilation, and promised to give nuclear technology to the Islamist government of Sudan (which is currently carrying out a policy of genocide against the weakest non-Muslim citizens in its country)—is simply nuts.

Christian Identity... Helping others? You must be stark raving mad.
Here's the thing. Christian charities are some of the most profitable organizations in the world. They can afford to give things. Do you think there is any money in the Muslim church to give to anyone? All of the money in that part of the world (rentier) goes to the state. There is very little middle class, very little discretionary income, and therefore no money to give to charities to give to people.
Also, Islam is really six or seven hundred years younger than christianity and a millenium younger than judaism.
Martyrdom was a HUGE part of christian life until not too far from the enlightenment. Stories of Saints Felecity and Perpetua still resonate around churches and monasteries and the writings of Gregory of Tour and others are still read and studied. The only thing different about now is that instead of beheading roman soldiers in the name of Jesus, one can now blow up a city block in the name of Allah.

>>675018 The problem here is that you are denying that any inherent problems or evils exist in your own religion. The problem inherent with all religions from the atheist point of view is that you believe in an afterlife, and that all good comes from a higher power, and that higher power is more important than anyone elses life or even your own.
An atheist sees no possibility of an afterlife. A smart atheist will realize it may be possible to prove them wrong if some great discovery is made, but due to lack of evidence they do not believe it exists. Since we believe in no after life and no God, some atheists believe that good and evil come from man. Good is the promotion of human beings and interests and wellbeing. Bad is the destruction of humans.
Because religion values God over people, people suffer. Christianity in the *west* may be the far lesser of two evils but it is still evil by my standards. Christian movements as of recent have also greatly upset me, even though a museum dedicated to "creationist theory" pales in comparison to a culture strapping bombs on retarded people and waddling them out into a bus to possibly kill a person or two and themselves in the process.
If you want to make the argument that Chrisitanity is great by comparison, that's not much of an argument. I could say George Bush is a great fucking leader *compared* to Hitler. Give me reasons why Christianity is so wonderful on its own virtues and I'll tell you why and how those virtues and beliefs are misguided.

Just like you said some smart atheist believe this and others so forth, well there are intelligent christians and not all are hellfire and brimstone kill anyone who says they think differently of me. though most are loonies, but in the end all i ever wanted was a good comedy movie to come out worthy of watching not involving a scary movie writer spoof. here i come /tv/!!!

>>675330 I would say that aside from a person's innate goodness, religion in general (and especially Christianity, if properly practiced) is the foremost way of encouraging people to behave in a way that benefits their fellow humans. I often hear atheists rail against the "guilt" that Christianity imposes on people, and that it keeps them from living their lives freely. But, if this "guilt" awakens us to the suffering and injustice around us, then is it a bad thing? Certainly, a society which had no internal conscience and no regard for others wouldn't last very long, or at least it wouldn't be a nice place to be in. You must remember that, in the case of America, many of the reform movements in the late 19th century were spiritually grounded. The "social gospel" energized many reformers, because they realized that if Jesus came back into Gilded Age America, he would probably throw up. When people began to look more critically at the Bible, and the teachings of Jesus, and realize that he really wasn't afraid to associate with the lowlifes of society, or say that the Jewish state was unjust in it's current form, they began to see parallesls between his world and their own. And because of this, they set about to correct society's evils, because they viewed that as the Christian thing to do.
Would they have done those things, if no preacher ever prodded them, or if they felt no moral duty to the rest of their neighbors? I think not. This is just one example of many in which Christians acted in the name of their God to bring some kind of positive change to the circumstances they lived in. Have evil actions been committed in the name of Christianity as well? Duh. But an association of words is meaningless if those actions do not reflect Jesus's actual teachings. It would be like me saying that I support Ron Paul, but at the same time want the government to vastly increase the size of the IRS.

>>675385 This is a nice point, and does apply to evangelicals who actually study their texts and learn something about life from it, much the same way it applies to fundamentalist Jews and Islams. However, the dominant faith is not evangelicism, it's the Catholicism/Protestantism closed faiths. Where evangelicism is a humble open faith sometimes, especially at local churches.

>>675385 LOL Christians are some of the most conservative bunch in all of society.
"Social Gospel" is spoken by only a tiny fraction of any sect of Christianity. The rest spend their time easing the conscience of their members so that they collection plate won't be empty.
They like to pat themselves on the back and think that churches were the focal point of the civil rights movement or other movements for freedom, while forgetting how most Christians were apologists for slavery and saw the Bible as an endorsement of it.

>>675403 And also, I wanted to add that the concept of valuing God's wisdom over human wisdom is completely misunderstood by many people. I could see how this would be a problem, say, if Christians were somehow commanded to kill/maim/harm anyone who wasn't Christian, or something along those lines. But the simple fact is that Christianity doesn't contain anything like that. (Protip: Crazy bullshit of questionable translation from some obscure Old Testament tome does not count.) So, in the end, I have no problem with it. We all know human judgement is inherently fallible; God's judgement is infallible, and since God has not made any knowably unjust judgement, you must also assume that Hid judgement is always just.
Christian history isn't full of the wild tales of fallible gods common to all other mythologies; the Judaic God was the first one who has a record of completely just judgement and a complete lack of fallible human qualities.

This is actually a bad comparison, since he's quite secular and just helps people without trying to cram the bible down their throats in one go.

People act like a thousand years is a long time, but really, it isn't. Human society has existed for maybe, shit, 10 000 years now. It wouldn't be a big deal if we went extinct, another species would arrive and dominate the earth probably, most likely a giant super-smart race of seapeople or birds.
Probably birds, as the sea will probably get hotter as the sun expands and the only thing left of our planet is gas and a little bit of matter in the center.

>>675330 I see many benefits of properly practiced organized religions just as I see many ignorant and backward atheists who think moral relativisim is acceptable. Overwhelmingly, foreign aid from the US for example, comes from private industry and religious organizations. That's a fact, and it is in large part to religions credit that they help make it so.
Guilt and charity as obligations are two things that I cannot condone as they run counter to rational thought. It is important for people to recognize that actions that benefit humanity as a whole *are* important to take, as we all profit from it. However, I find it immoral to dictate that charity should be mandatory for someone or some group. It should be up to the individual to determine how and to whom they should give, because reason is mans greatest weapon in his fight for survival, not duty or guilt. By applying reason, I think we can make better headway and improve society and the world in vastly superior ways. Emotion is inherent in all people. However it's important to temper emotion with reason and logic, and many of the inherent virtues of Christianity run counter to this.
The stagnation of Christianity is also something that I've seen and been dismayed with. Where are the modern Martin Luthers, proposing revolutionary new philisophical ideals, and pointing out the corruption and problems with Christianity? Where are the modern Gregor Mendels who saw nature and *reality* as Gods work, not the Bible as the literal definition of reality? Where are the great thinkers and progressive elements of the Church? Denial of genetic evolution is one thing, but denying *philisophical* and ideological evolution is by far the greater crime.

I am a believer in a fairly abstract god (Lol Ben Franklin) so its
NO CHURCHES
NO BIZARRE CREEDS
SECULAR HUMANISM ONLY
FINAL DESTINATION
For me. I personally believe there is an objective standard we must hold all humans to, because as a great British General once said "You take your women and burn them in fires, you claim this is your tradition. We will hang up the men who do this, as it is ours". We must hold people to one standard, because we can't insult the people like the blacks in Africa (lol Stormfront) or the rednecks (Lol Amerikkkans) or the Europeans (Lol Yurps). Why should Christianity have a monopoly on those values? Just explain why not Buddhism, or the Dreaded Islam?

Christians are not better people than agnostics, muslims, athiests or anyone else. To claim that your religion makes you a better person, gives you morals, etc. is a fucking joke, you are a fucking joke. You refuse to accept that you are nothing, your believes are the only thing that define you as a person and that is really fucking pathetic. You know why I'm a semi-decent person? Because I would not like it if someone stabbed me, thusly, I don't stab another person. I don't need some pedophile with a book written by people who wanted control over the public to tell me what is right and what is wrong. To claim that morality comes from the bible and religious teachings, when civilization existed before your pathetic texts is a fallacy only considered by retards. The only way civilization can even exist is basic human decency and the will to band together. You think moral would suddenly form because some faggot came down with "God's" rules? I can't even contemplate how fucking stupid you'd have to be to believe that bullshit. The world would be better off without you. At worst, there'd still be plenty of wars, but atleast everyone would be up front about it. Instead of claiming to hide behind their imaginary friend's supposed words and teachings.
