Police are investigating two teenagers allegedly involved in distributing pornographic photos via mobile phones to high school students.

While the 19-year-old man and 16-year-old youth have been charged with possessing and distributing child pornography after a short investigation, the 15-year-old girl, who allegedly took her photo and sent it to her boyfriend, which later led to the dissemination, has been spoken to.

The inquiry arose after police were alerted that an explicit video featuring the victim was being circulated via students' mobile phones.

He said it was very disappointing because mobile phones and other technology were being abused by students, who should use it in school for emergency purposes only.

“The passing of any images or video by any medium can be construed as inappropriate and in many cases, if the images are inappropriate, then that would be considered unlawful and police will investigate those matters," Chief Inspector Quinn said.

“Police investigations are ongoing and, while only two people have been charged with possession of the video, it is understood a significant number of students had received it and most likely re-transmitted it.

“Please ask your child to show you the contents of their phone and hard drives.

“If they cannot do so willingly, then perhaps they need to delete offending items as, if they are in possession of pornography or have passed material on to others, they put themselves at risk of having committed a criminal offence.”
