A Hollywood movie set in Second World War-era Japanese-occupied Shanghai has been denied approval to shoot in China, a producer said Tuesday.
Producer Mike Medavoy said the filmmakers wanted to shoot on location in Shanghai but the Chinese government didn't clear them to do so. "The film is about Shanghai at that period," Medavoy said in an e-mail. "Shanghai is a character in the film, its human side, what was so unique about it. There must have been a misunderstanding and I hope they reconsider their decision."
"This obviously comes as a shock to all of us," director Mikael Hafstrom was quoted saying by Hollywood trade publication Variety's Asian news website.
"We don't know exactly why we have been turned down."
Variety reported Hafstrom has been in China since September preparing for the movie and has already spent hundreds of thousands of dollars and now plans to move the shoot to Hong Kong and Macau.
