More than 500 people are gathered in front of the old Berkeley City Hall late this afternoon as anti-war and pro-military groups rally before the city council considers a proposal to rescind a controversial statement urging the Marines to get out of the city.
Two hours before the meeting was to begin, the red-white-and-blue clad pro-military supporters seemed to far outnumber the anti-war protesters.
Three people have been arrested during the rallies that began before dawn.
Pete S. Alvatore, of Rocklin near Sacramento, was arrested shortly after 1 p.m. on suspicion of brandishing a weapon, said Berkeley police Sgt. Mary Kusmiss.
Some supporters of Code Pink - a women's peace group - wrapped Alvatore in a large banner and he claimed he needed the knife to free himself, Kusmiss said.
