man slashed a therapist to death Tuesday night on the Upper East Side and then fled after seriously cutting a physician who had come to her aid, the police said.

A meat cleaver and a knife were found at the scene, but it was unclear whether one or both were used in the attacks.

No arrests were made, and investigators were searching for the attacker, who the police said had run from the scene. The motive and the relationship of the attacker to the therapist were unknown.

The attacks occurred about 9 p.m. in professional offices a few steps up from the lobby at 435 East 79th Street, an apartment building at the corner of York Avenue, the police said. A doorman at the building called 911, the police said.

The victims’ identities were not immediately released. The female victim suffered multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, the police said. She had a doctorate, but her exact profession was not immediately known.
