NEWPORT, R.I. (CBS) ? Officials have told The Associated Press Mitt Romney will endorse former rival John McCain.
They will appear together in Boston this afternoon, according to CBS station WBZ-TV.
Romney will make the endorsement at his campaign headquarters. He will release his 280 delegates and ask them to support McCain, according to published reports.
The officials have told spoke on condition of anonymity. Romney will release his 288 delegates and urge them to back McCain.
The former Massachuttsetts governor dropped out of the race last week. It became apparent that toppling McCain would be near impossible.
Romney's departure from the race came almost a year after his formal entrance, when the Michigan native declared his candidacy on Feb. 12, 2007, at the Henry Ford Museum of Innovation in Dearborn, Mich.
