Not to be one-upped by the Clinton Campaign, presidential candidate hopeful Barack Obama visited General Motor’s oldest operating production plant in Janesville, Wisconsin.
“I believe that if our government is there to support you, and give you the assistance you need to retool and make this transition, that this plant will be here for another hundred years,” he said, according to the Detroit News.
As president, he said he would invest $150 billion to create 5 million “green-collar” jobs and another $60 billion to rebuild highways, bridges, and airports.
Michigan Democratic activist and GM Foundation head Debbie Dingell, said, “It was significant. When he talks about these issues, he demonstrates that he gets it.”
Obama has been critical of automakers in the past, but now (in need of their support) he has based, at least, part of his campaign on aiding the auto industry, which, as of now, still predominantly sides with Sen. Hilary Clinton. But, Obama’s gaining ground – as he swept Virginia and Maryland with the help of blue-collar votes.
John Dohner Jr., the shop chairman for the plant’s UAW Local 95, said, “I like what he’s saying. We all know we’ve got to get more fuel-efficient. It’s going to happen. The auto industry is going to change.”
