United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger expects 15,000 workers to take GM up on its latest buyout offers. That’s a lower number than GM was hoping for – about 34,000 workers accepted GM’s 2006 buyout offers.
He told the Detroit News that the housing market and lack of other jobs will make GM’s offers tough for hourly UAW workers to accept.
He said, “If you just look at the economy, overall, everybody’s concerned about whether were in a recession. You’ve got the sub-prime issue, you got the tight money markets out there, so, a lot of things have changed in people’s lives. Some people have planned on retiring and leaving the state. Would you do that right now, knowing what the housing market is? You got all these factors that weren’t there a year and half ago, or two years ago.”
