"Obama, doesn't he sound a little naive?" asked Huenke, 52. "He stands up there, so optimistic, preaching about hope and change. It sounds great and everything, but come on. He doesn't quite get it."
Voters like Huenke present a difficult challenge to Sen. Barack Obama as he looks ahead to March 4, when primary battles with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in Ohio and Texas threaten to halt his campaign's momentum. In Lima and other fading manufacturing towns, he must confront difficult questions that go to the heart of his candidacy and its appeal to a broad section of Americans:
Can grandiose visions of hope and change resonate in places where change -- in this case economic change -- has brought housing foreclosures and economic ruin, where hope means avoiding another round of layoffs? Can a candidate whose support has been based on African Americans and upper-middle-class whites transcend class and race in places where racial tension still colors everything?

EVERYONE is accountable for their actions. I'm an alcoholic, so I surrendered my drivers license. That's what responsibility is. I may not ever be able to quit drinking. God won't help me, and neither will AA, so I made the personal change that minimizes the damage I can do. Now, at worst, I'm an embarrassment.
I made the correct decision.

"I may not ever be able to quit drinking. God won't help me, and neither will AA."
The steps actually work but you must do each of them. AA did little for me but works for many.
With rare periods of sobriety I drank 30+ years but just marked 12 sober.
You *must* reconstruct a healthy life to replace the destructive one.
dood....if i can do it anyone can.

>>701538 My problem is the reflexive part of the conditioning of AA. You don't have to help anyone when it's God's responsibility. Sponsors are necessary to enter(I imagine that part seems like a non-sequitur compared to the prior sentence. I assure you, it is not. Think 'Masons'. They require the same thing. A sponsor.) For ME(not you), that's bullshit. People who need help, need to be given a hand up.

>>701770 Forget AA for now. There is something evil about the disease. If you turn the job over to your intellect you have a compromised alcoholic brain contesting your sobriety.
I used to see the turning over to a higher power too born again to do. Now I simply catch the initial thoughts of drinking and suggest to whatever might care or be there that I'm powerless so I'm signing off the argument.
This appears to short circuit addictive rationalization. Hell, I'm pragmatic and dry so who cares if the so called higher power is Mickey Mouse, gawd or just not dwelling on something you already know is insidious?

>>702488 It makes sense to me actually. I'm a heavy smoker trying to cut back. Never liked drinking too too much as I don't like the loss of self control, but I can see how it's addiction can be powerful. Because of that, it makes sense to combat irrationality with more irrationality in this one instance.
It's like trying to rationalize someone out of their faith. Faith isn't based on reason, neither is addiction. You fight a compulsion with another learned compulsion however, it might work.
