I need your best tips for not getting killed on the highway.

I would like to push my weekly mileage into a couple/few hundred shortly...and already having exhausted trails and city streets I'm going to have to do much of it on highways. Enough of them will be without a shoulder, being common where I am (also, two lane 55mph). Things I've ascertained in cycling literature just make me think that, given enough time spent on the road, I will have good odds of dying.

If you want avoid death as a direct result of cycling on the highway, you should practice the same sorts of things that are good ideas when commuting/riding in traffic in general: make yourself visible, ride predictably, follow all traffic laws, and match your speed as closely as possible to the prevailing speed of traffic - if drivers want to get irritated, that's their problem, you have an equal right to road (assuming you live somewhere civilized), just be courteous and make it easy for fast drivers to pass. Also, check your local laws and talk to local riders to see if they have anything to say specifically relevant to your region.

Ultimately the only real thing to do is accept that riding on the highway is a risk and go have fun regardless.

Here's an example...not much of the road in this picture but you get the idea. Also, a lot of these roads have steep ditches a foot from the pavement.

That is a single section of a single highway. There is thousands of miles of highways which I will be riding on.

1. don't go on the highway.
2. It is illegal to use any non-motorized form of transport on the highway. (this includes walking.)
3. you will probably get clipped by a car OR you will more likely get pulled into traffic due to the intense rushing winds that follow along higways.
(have you ever stopped your car on a highway to fix a flat tire? Its terrifying, the wind is cause enough for panic. Not to mention how pants-shittingly scary it is if you have to replace a driver's side tire. 1 foot from the trucks and tonnes of steel hurtling past you.) bycycle wouldn't stand a chance.

protip: don't go on the highway. you'll most likely be arrested if you are lucky. dead if you aren't. there are always country road side routes that circumvent the highways. use google if you don't believe me.
also look up the laws on highway traffic use.
