In the 80's, buses were congesting the streets of Seattle, so they proposed the construction of the Bus Tunnel. The tunnel opened in the 90's with the intention to retrofit it for light rail cars, but that hasn't been done until recently. The light rail cars are supposed to arrive in 2009 and eventually evict the buses from the tunnel a few years down the road. They've been doing a lot of light rail car tests recently and they seem pretty nice so far.
