Key notes:
The SMART project is estimated to cost about $450 million, plus another $90 million to develop the bicycle-pedestrian pathway from one end of the corridor to the other.

Uses existing tracks and would require minimal increases in taxes to fund.

Totally going to have a real, modern rail transit system in the North Bay.

this is almost like a joke site.

although i agree with them that heavy rail probably isn't the best choice for honolulu, a few well-placed light rail lines would be an improvement.

Since the cost of the project itself is relatively low, I'm hoping that the ticket cost won't be too much, but you never know. This, along with the (relatively) new system that San Diego has using similar trains, and the CA High-speed system on the ballot this November, I hope the state revives economical, practical rail travel, if only within the state.

It's not heavy rail (which is what the old HART proposal was), it's a light rail line that will be elevated for most of its route (because we can't fit it in any other way.)

i see an opportunity for maglev or bullet train technology. Sometimes using old technology can hinder growth in the long run. I think this is a perfect opportunity to develop on new grounds. But either way an active rail system will complement the emerging new market...

Honolulu's project is heavy rail. It is totally grade separated, supposedly averages 30mph, carries 9,000 passengers peak hour, and gets it electricity from a third rail. That IS heavy rail

Not a bad idea, but unless it's really cheap or has some sort of tie-in with the ferry, don't expect anyone to use it to commute to the city; ferry tickets are already about $180 for a month. You'd be better off carpooling to work.

In the case of the mitigations described in S.M.A.R.T.'s final EIR for the environmentally sensitive area around Gallinas Creek and the land near the San Rafael Airport and McGinnis Park, mitigation is a deadly word.

Inhabiting the region adjacent to the rail road tracks in this area are endangered species, engaged in a life and death struggle for their habitat. Their habitat is threatened by the airport owners' proposal to build a 4 acre indoor soccer complex and the re-building of railroad track, building a new bike path and constant train travel and use of the bike trail.

This is home to the federally endangered California clapper rail. The rails have been making a painfully slow recovery in this area after being nearly devastated by 19th century hunting and 20th century land development. Wildlife biologists with Avocet Research Associates, a local firm, have detected clapper rail breeding territories along the entire length of Gallinas Creek on many occasions over the last several years. Marin Audubon has stated that the Gallinas Creek tidal marsh system is home to the North Bay's largest concentration of clapper rails.

Barbara Salzman, of Marin Audubon, told me that the mitigation measures called for were vague. Barbara went on to say, "None of the measures will actually save the habitat or ensure its replacement somewhere else. No other location has been identified at which Rail habitat can be created to replace the habitat that will be lost, nor has any restoration plan been made available for public review. We are not sure there even is an actual mitigation plan."
