You're basically asking about installing thousands of miles of lines that aren't compatible with existing rolling stock. It'll be a major pain to find new rights-of-way for that track, unless you tear out old track and replace it, which is another pain in the ass.

JR Tokai will build a Maglev Shinkansen line from Tokyo to Nagoya.

From what I gather, Chernobyl happened because the fucking insulation material was flammable or some shit. But it's true, nuclear power is safe as hell. I live in alabama and there's actually a plant about 50 miles from here.

I don't see much use for maglev on a distance lower than 10km. The time gained is minimal. A good trip should be between 100 and 1000km.

Rail for freight is unlikely to be replaced until the end of the century at least. There's still much that can be done about logistics, which is the real time hog in transporting goods.

what happened next is kinda complicated, but the result was sharp increase in power that blew the lid off the reactor. hot graphite was exposed to air and started burning, sending most of the radioactive material into air
the thing is, design of reactor contributed to catastrophe, but the ultimate cause was stupid personnell

Actually, they are more energy efficient than conventional trains, since they have no rolling resistance.. In case of Transrapid, hovering a car takes less power then air conditioning.
And energy loses in coils are not too great, because only a small segment of track under the train is powered.

The real problem is that it is more expensive than conventional railway.

This seems to be the biggest problem. Also, you can always run a diesel locomotive (or some kind of an engineering vehicle) on a conventional railway if there's some emergency or a power failure, so there are some safety and security concerns as well.
