So I want to get my pilots licence /n/ .

Can someone help me with the steps? And what prices I'm looking at in pounds.

So I've read a little and seems the first thing I have to do is have a short trial lesson to see if I am competent. A local airport will do this trial for £50 for half an hour and £100 for an hour.

But after this one do they all cost £100 an hour? Because you have to log something like 45 hours to get your licence correct. And that's a whopping £4,500!

Yep. Here in the States it generally costs between $3000 and $5000 to get a private pilot license. Keep in mind that not only do you have to pay for the aircraft rental, but you'll also have to pay an instructor for their time.

Hi OP.
I'm a private pilot student from Canada. Started when I was 16 (now 18) and still working on it. Chances are money is the only factor and difficulty since as previously stated, it costs around $5-8,000 total.

Go to your local flight school, and schedule a "discovery flight". They will show you through some basic maneuvers, and tell you what it's like to fly. You won't have to do any on-the-spot stuff to see if you can hack it -- unless you are clinically retarded, you can be a pilot. Most you'll need to know is basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; and unlike fighter pilots who may have to do this stuff on the fly, yours will all be pre-planned.

You'll probably train on 152's, since 172's are larger thus more expensive. Ground school will come first, in which you'll need ~40hrs. There is a lot of information that you will need to know and grasp, so be ready and willing to study on your off time.

Once done ground school (which should take around 2-3 months) then you have your exams. In Canada the pass mark is 90%, and it's rare to see below 95% (at least at my school). You will be tested on all covered subjects, and when finished it will be corrected to 100% for you to make sure you know it.

From there on, you start your in-flight stuff. It's fairly self explanatory, and you'll most likely just follow a guidebook on what needs to be taught. You'll need a certain amount of hrs dual and also solo, as well as specialized flights such as x-country, night routes, etc.

I only pay a flat amount per hour based on if it's solo or dual (instructor). Dual is $50 additional, totaling $150/hr. Depends on the school.

£100p/h for a C150 + instructor sounds pretty steep compared to what is typically charged in the US, Canada and Australia/NZ but I hear flying over in Europe is ridiculously expensive anyway.

It certainly doesn't hurt to shop around before you spend your dough!

you can still get a sport pilots license, it has some limitations (see the link below), but costs a whole lot less and requires less time.

The problem is that YURIP has controlled airspace practically everywhere, and the UK sports pilot equivalent doesn't let you fly planes outside the UK.

If you just want to learn to fly, consider a glider club first. It's cheaper (no fuel) and for me only pay for tow/winch.

Try getting our Car Drivers Licence in NSW-- 120 hours of mandatory 'logged' driving, which for Nerds means $50-$100/hour driving instructors.

Who the fuck does all 120 with an instructor?

Here in Australia you can get a PPL for about $9000 AUD. (40 hours dual and 10 solo, in before memes)

I know this is gonna probably raise some eyebrows, but you could get it for free if you join the military, at least last I checked, all you really have to do it just perform to the best of your ability and always push for more training and you might just be able to avoid sitting in the sand for too long.

I was in that fucking boat myself, until I moved to New South Wales (from Queensland), and could get a riders/scooters license off the bat, just about. I've got about 5-6 mates (who're in their 30s now) back in QLD who can't even get a scooter because of the Car License requirement (and even then, need ?50 hours of 'accompanied' riding.

We're talking introverted Nerds here, not Rich White Kids who got a Subaru as a present for starting Year 12, or fucking Ferals that can walk into any pub and go "FFAAARRRKK ME, MATE... FAWRKING COPPA WANTS TO PUT ME IN GAOL IFFI DUN GET A LICENCE FOR ME UTE. SLABA BEER INNIT."
