0 Series Shinkansen to make farewell runs
The Yomiuri Shimbun
OSAKA--The nation's first generation 0 series Shinkansen bullet trains, which are to be retired from service by the end of November, are scheduled to make farewell runs between Shin-Osaka and Hakata in December, West Japan Railway Co. has announced.
Currently, the trains only run as Kodama superexpresses on the Sanyo-Shinkansen Line. However, during the farewell runs, the trains will be referred to as Hikari superexpresses, a name originally used to describe them that is thought to better describe the train's elegant shape.
The trains will make limited runs between Shin-Osaka Station in Osaka and Hakata Station in Fukuoka on Dec. 6, 13 and 14. The trains are scheduled to depart from Shin-Osaka at 2:56 p.m as the Hikari 347 service on those days. Only one train is scheduled to make the return trip from Hakata Station, departing at 8:06 a.m. on Dec. 14 as the Hikari 340 service.
The 0 series Shinkansen will each comprise six cars with reserved seats only. Tickets are expected to be sold nationwide one month before the farewell runs.
Making its debut as a superexpress train capable of speeds up to 210 kph in 1964--a world record at that time--the bullet trains were withdrawn from the Tokaido Shinkansen Line in 1999 and were renamed Kodama superexpresses on the Sanyo-Shinkansen Line in March 2003.
A JR West official said, "It [0 Series Shinkansen] has carried the dreams of millions of passengers, therefore, we would like to let it run as a Hikari superexpress one more time."
