I say this every time a maglev thread comes up, but...
What is so great about going everywhere so fast? Isn't that what promoted air travel in the first place? People's URGENT NEED to be in another country within hours?
Maglevs are completely incompatible with current infrastructure, and so would need a brand new system to be laid out. A return to conventional and high-speed rail would use pre-existing rail grades and would be able to move people quickly, but not unnecessarily so.
For trans-oceanic trips, what about ferries? Or my personal favorite, airships? I'd much rather get across the ocean in 3-4 days in comfort than in 7 hours without sleep. Besides, ocean travel is less energy-intensive than air OR rail.
You could also build rail lines across continental junctions, like Spain/Morocco or Russia/Alaska. A high-speed train could make a several-day trip over land that way, picking people up far more conveniently than a ferry can.
