I'll leave the historical points to others (if so inclined) but on a personal note:
I was 9 years old when we went on "big long plane rides"; one to New York then to Germany to visit my Aunt and Uncle (USAF). I remembered three things about the actual trip.
1. Flying at night is boring.
2. That great broad apron.
3. The building that dwarfed even that.
I've had no clue until I saw this pic that that was where I'd been.
That was 1964. No Shit.
Anyone else have memories of this place?
