The Talyllyn is run by enthusiasts, plus it is narrow gauge, much of Sodor is standard gauge.
Sodor's railways would have switched to diesel and probably scaled back to just the mainline after its absorption into British Railways.
The island's narrow gauge railways would probably have survived as an enthusiast run heritage line like the Talyllyn though.
