1st gen discos are great trucks if they've been maintained. if the people selling it are the 1st owners or at least have all the information regarding maintenance then it might be a good buy.
check for oil around the engine, the old rover engines they used always blew gaskets so if the engine bay is full of oil all over the place then it might be a good idea to stay away. if it looks clean, see what the water pump looks like, this also has a tendency to blow up so if it looks new that's good and bad... bad because people sometimes drive the truck without the waterpump working and end up overheating the engine. ALSO, check the trans fluid, the automatic trans can sometimes burn up all the fluid so just make sure its clean and full.
i owned a 96 disco for 5 years and only did routine maintenance on it through that time. the only thing that went bad on the engine was the waterpump. the original pulley literally broke off of it and drained the coolant all over the road. luckily it was winter and the truck didnt overheat or anything. i still regret getting rid of it, best truck i ever owned.
