My friend is having a dilemma, and my word isn't good enough at the moment.

My friend has two cars, one of which just needs a tune up and a battery to run. And a car that runs just fine.

These two cars are a 1990-92 Chevy Camaro V6 with T-Tops. The other car, a 1998 Mercedes E250. Both are automatics, both are V6s.

The camaro is the one that needs the tune up and battery.

He needs to find out if he should keep the Mercedes or sell it and then fix up the camaro as his first car.

Cost me 2k for a local shop to build and sell me a 350 small block, $750 performance heads, a holley 670 street avenger plus intake manifold, dizzy and mechanical fuel pump. Paid $120 for some headman headers and $250 for a local exhaust shop to do 3 inches from the headers back.

Shit fucking flies. All you gotta do is get rid of that womans driving aid and replace it with a manual and you're set.

Camaros are everywhere. if he really wants that one, sell the Merc, take the money, and have someone swap an LT1 into it. By the time he spent all that money, he could have gone out and bought an '87 corvette that didn't have a damn thing wrong with it.

v8 swap is going to be a pain in the ass for the Camaro. trans might support 300 horsepower for a while but it will not bolt up since it is probably from a 60 degree V6. the rear end will support 300 horsepower with no aggressive launches ever. the front springs will be wrong. the cross members will all be wrong. the drive shaft will be wrong.

Those rear ends are made of glass. Typical GM, they're built to spec and no more. I've heard of people on the Third Gen F-body Forums shattering them after adding 50rwhp to the V8 models.

Which one has fewer miles/less rust/is in better condition? I guess in the end it doesn't matter though, since it's his first car he'll crash it in a year anyway.

If they sell the Merc, they will take the Camaro in to get a tune up and get it professionally cleaned. After that, I am going to talk him into getting his parents to give him some more money to tune it up with my typical "It increases gas mileage/reliability" bullshit. When in all reality, it just makes it sound better.

Mind you, these people are upper-middle class, but they save their money instead of spending it on rich person bullshit.

I've done this. It's a royal fucking pain in the ass. Your rear-end is weak as fuck. Your transmission is weak as fuck. Your cooling system is weak as fuck. The whole goddamn process is a nightmare. But if you're dead set on it, this is what you MUST do to get it to live:
1. Cool it off. Get a 2 core Aluminum radiator. This is going to set you back probably $700 or better. FUCKING DO IT. Even a 4 core brass radiator isn't good enough when summertime comes. I tried the brass radiator. Been there, done that, got the worn out shoes to prove it. Buy a goddamn aluminum radiator.

2. Buy an oil cooler. This will help your engine live.

3. Buy a transmission cooler. This will help your transmission live.

4. If you have the skills, build the ever living fuck out of your 7 5/8" rear end. You'll need to bolt on a good girdle, weld the axle tubes to the center section, weld in gusset plates from the axle tubes to the center section, throw away the 26 spline axles and carrier and replace it with 31 spline Strange or Moser axles, and put in a Richmond or Auburn gear set and differential.

5. If you don't have the skills, buy a 9" Currie. I don't know anyone else who makes an appropriate rear without doing ladder bars / 4 link and thus back-halving the car, which now you're talking serious cash.

6. The transmission has to go. Whatever's in there. They were all shit. The T-5's were never meant to handle more than 225 horsepower, and WILL fucking grenade themselves if you try to run more though them. The stock TH700R4's are a bit better, but still weak compared to a properly built 700. That said, this gets tricky, because if you aren't back halving the car, the tail shaft will fuck with you because of the torque arm. There are ways around this though. Spohn make a good Torque Arm mount so that you can put any transmission you want in there, or you can buy a TCI or B&M built TH700R4 that can handle the power.

7. It's a 25 year old car. The suspension is shot. And the body flexed horribly from the factory. Time to weld in some sub frame connectors and start replacing bushings. All this can be either homemade (if you have the skills) or sourced. Spohn has everything you need to make it right.

8. The exhaust is a fucking nightmare. There's no such thing as a true dual exhaust that comes in a box. It will HAVE to be custom bent. This is actually OK though, because it will probably come out cheaper anyway. Just find an old guy that has a pipe bender that has been working on cars for 30 years and ask him to hook you up.

There you go. Now your Camaro is fast and driveable at the same time.

I don't know where people are getting the idea that he wants to put a V8 into it. Sure, it would be cool, but that is what buying a new car is for. It's cheaper that way, and the ones around here have under 100k miles on them for under 3k.

Also, his next V8 is probably going to be the newer Camaro. He isn't a car guy so he doesn't care about performance, just the looks.

This will be funny because he tells me he wants to race his new camaro against my new 5.0 Mustang when we get back from Boot Camp. He doesn't understand that the 5.0 is faster!

I'd keep the Camaro. It'll be MUCH cheaper in the long run to keep running, considering that anyone with the mental capacity to buy wrenches is capable of working on one, parts are as close as your local Kragenzone or junkyard, and those parts are incredibly cheap.

If he wants to build the sixxer, that family V6 was offered in a few larger displacements than were put in the Camaro, so he can just find one of those and swap the rest of the motor over to it. Port the intake and heads, and he's got a low-buck, junkyard-part V6 that'll scoot more than it has a right to.
