So /o/, I live in Australia and am In the market for a new car.

I just drive a c200 Mercedes Esprit (1997), and wanting something powerful as my current car is quite borning.

My budget is between 20-35k. I am seriously considering a 2002-2003 Subaru STI. Is there a better car I could get in terms of performance and reliability? Any other suggestions welcome.

Yeah I would love to buy a my05, If I could find one for 25k with reasonably low k's I'd be seriously amazed.

cast vs hypereutectic pistons (similar to forged)
5spd vs strong 6spd gearbox with better diffs
smaller heavier wheels vs ligher wheels and possibly wider

it is still Open Deck block which can be restrictive if modding your car

exhaust header in wrx or stis are a mile long so compared to evos its shit

It is a 2.0ltr engine so be prepared to rev its tits off.

Are there any other cars similar performance wise, for the same amount of money that you would consider? keeping in mind reliability is an issue, as this will be my daily.

And also some good bang for your buck mods, looking to spend about 5k on mods.

When buying an sti, are there any obvious things I can look for to see if it has been maintained well? I'm guessing a lot of these cars have been thrashed, is it impossible to find one that isn't?

Another 5k or so would have 300rwkw

Very reliable, performance wise you could throw a bit in to suspension parts.

Added bonus.. parts are cheap as hell.

which city do you live close to?

in terms of checking for issues you can get racq (or equivalent) to have a look.
I would pay few hundred to get a Leak Down and Compression test...its 2 tests and will give you a fair indication of engine health.

Most wrxs or stis have been driven with a bit of 'spirit' ;) doesnt necessarily mean its been thrashed.

i'd be more concerned about accident history and repairs.

Also check service history and intervals.

join up to a few wrx forums and read through to find stuff to look out for.

lets say both cars do 500km, the subi is about 8-9ltrs in front. thats 8-9ltrs every full tank.
wonder what the figures are when you drive those cars with a bit of spirit. I think the subi would still be in front...in fuel usage and the track/qtr mile/street drag/<insert whatever>

golf gtis are pretty decent for fwd and nice inside
mazda mps6 are very underrated sedans
liberty gt or 3.0r

I don't think any of those will outperform an STi, but spec sheet numbers shouldn't be the only determining factor
