Im not a cyclist, but i can't help but feel like your helmet is the one thing you don't want to cheap out on.

(dont worry, they also come in flat black so you dont have to have a bro-tastic paintjob on yours)

I searched several shops for good fullface helmets and this one is great, $120, two face shields, tons of vents (that work), AWESOME comfort, and a bright red LED light on the back that you can have display a solid, flashing, or quicker-flashing light (improves visibility at night greatly).

Oh god this, I was riding up to a friends house party, someone was checking out the bikes and noticed both bolts on my front caliper had turned out almost all the way on the way up.

I bought a gmax 68s as my first helmet a few years ago, got a blue one, looked cool and felt ok from what I remember. Mine was only 100 bucks though, don't know why they raised the price. I wear a Hi-Viz yellow scorpion exo700 now though, people usually stay out of my way.

snell good, but not completely necessary. the article he posted showed that snell focuses on qualifying stiffer helmets, which arent always desirable as they deliver more G's to the head than "softer" helmets, which are often cheaper. DOT definitely a must of course, and standard on all street helmets. honestly just wear your helmet even if you dont have a helmet law in your state- thats the best thing any of us could tell you

well, i'm in the market for a bike right now (never driven one)
