Auto noob here. Thinking about purchasing a 2006 Ford Focus ZX4 SE for a daily commute car in the North-East US (snow, hills, etc.). What does /o/ think? Basically I wanted something that would be a bit more fun than a ma-and-pa car, while still being practical. Please and thanks.

Also, I have a stupid question. How can I tell if the head unit can be replaced? It certainly appears like it can be, but I'm not sure. Pic related - the interior of the vehicle.

Focus isn't bad, you can make it a lot more fun on the cheap with the SVT suspension kit (parts available from just about any Ford dealer for less than $300).

The ZX3 will be a more fun car than the ZX4 without much loss in practicality, however, I'm thinking that all ZX4s had the 2.3L, whereas only later ZX3s did.

Not sure what your budget is, but you may be able to find an SVT in your budget. Those were offered in 3 and 5 door versions, though from the focus guys I know, they say a 2.3L car with SVT suspension is better than an actual SVT..

The insurance would be more on a 2-door than a 4-door, which is why I'm leaning towards a ZX4. My insurance will be $100 a month as-is.

I DD a focus. That's the stock head unit. Also, don't trick yourself in to thinking they're good performance platform, but they can be fun to drive.

Oh btw, if you're planning on doing basic maintenance by yourself you're in luck, the engine bay on these things is really really easy to work around and oil and etc. is a breeze.

Oh durp, thought you were asking if it HAD been replaced. And yes, you can replace it with pretty much anything. Unfortunately 99% of aftermarket head units look like alien space ships, but yeah, you could if you wanted to. You'd just need to cover up any empty space that's left since it's so tall stock, that can be done easily. Why would you want to replace it?

they are by no means a drag racing car, but they can be fun for cone-faggery, they are very common in auto-x and the whole formula of lightweight +good suspension=momentum readily applies to this car

the 2.3L models can make upwards of 180 WHP with some basic mods, they are by no means competition for turbo monsters on bigger tracks, but even then there are many reputable companies making good power upgrades

This could be true, but I have no idea. I'm just assuming if you got the hook/fuckers/things back and took it out you could get the wires back in to an aftermarket unit. I've never looked in to it because the stock ones fine.

My buddy has a head unit in his car that syncs with your phone via bluetooth and plays music without plugging anything in. It's pretty sweet. It's something I'd like to have the option to do in the future.

Okay, I'd maybe vouch for them for small time auto x if you want a casual racing hobby that costs less than $500. Still OP, don't expect this to be much of a performance platform other than that sort of stuff.

Not that I'm saying you are, I just know a lot of people who get a focus DD and see sites like focal jet and immediately think they have a race car.

anybody who thinks that the focus is a street legal race car sort of deal is fucking delusional, they make very little power, have a small aftermarket, they've not been made in a performance model in 3 years, there hasn't been a new focus in america in 10 years (though the 2012 has just started shipping) but like i said, the 2.3L and SVTs are very good for auto-x, and while rare, i have seen tarbo'd foci that do race, but we're talking full prep style gutted interior, caged, towed on a trailer, none of this racing your daily driver bullshit.

Love my car. the 06's beautiful, since they have just enough chrome to differentiate from the earlier 2000s models that honestly looked was too plastic.

Mines a 3 door, so I pay more insurance than the 4 door, but it's worth it. Minimum gas mileage I get is usually around 28 for the city and i've hit about 35 highway.

Never had a problem with it, except breaking part of the trunk cover that is attached to the trunk to raise it when you open it ><

Good. I think most of the people ITT are talking about racing and auto x because focus drivers can get sucked in to thinking they're performance cars. Kind of like civic drivers. They're great DDs, but don't be modding it.
