Hi /o/, I need some advice.

I'm in the market for a new car. I have it narrowed down to between a Chevy Cobalt (2005-2006) or a Cavalier (2003-2005).

The only problem I have run into is the car has to have less than 65,000 miles and under $7500. I'm in the Buffalo, NY area, and I want to know what would be a better bet for less issues down the road with the cars.

I heard Cobalts are problem cars from one guy and they are fine from another one who owns one.

That's the reason I want one of these cars. Cheap, good gas mileage and my dad knows how to fix GM vehicles. Going from a '98 S-10 which gets 18-20.

I just want a low mileage starting point. I would rather not get a car with 120,000 on it and have some worn out tranny problem in 10,000 miles.

I just serviced a 2005 cobalt in my shop the other day, dont get one. Lots of specialized parts are required for basic testing, the trim and finish is almost tupperware plastic, a bunch of TSB's on the car for almost everything under the rainbow. cramped rear seats, poor handling, even the 2.2 lacks power and guzzles like fuck.

Unless you have a force-induced SS model and you want a fast failwheeldrive, look elsewhere.

Also, dont be afraid to look for a car under model year 2000. Hondas and Toyotas from those years are absolute gold. higher mileage doesn't mean its a bad car. neglecting to maintain the car properly is what makes a car go bad

I decided on those years because I like the body styles. What about a Cavalier? They seem to be cheaper, and quick fixes.

the cavalier got replaced with the cobalt because the cavalier was getting a bad rep for quality and reliability.

sounds like your daddy has you on a chevy trip. haven't had much exeprience with them, but I beleive they share the same engine options, could be wrong though. IMHO i think that chevy would use a common platform for both vehicles to reduce costs. once again, dont quote me, just a guess. but if they DO share similar components, you can expect similar problems.

btw, how much does your dad know about chevy's? is he just a chevy guy, or does he actually have certification/ work as a GM tech? get a car that is known for good quality, mpg's and mechanical simplicity.

Body style is a very poor choice to choose a car. after a while, you will learn to love your vehicle for what it is. Just imagine dating snooki. sure, her body may look good but...

Before the GM issue a few years ago, he had worked for the company for 29 1/2 years until he was forcefully retired. He knows Chevys in and out better than most of the techs at my local dealerships.

no trollin, get a honda civic/acura integra from the 90's. just wait, take your time, look for one that hasn't been molested by ricers. both cars are proven to be great cars in almost every aspect.

btw, dont get any of the newer civics/rsx's from 2001 and up. not nearly as good

do not get a cobalt, btw their was a thread about this last night.. i own a cobalt and i regret buying it. front end components are total shit, control arm bushings/ sway bar links/ wheel bearings/ struts/ tie rod ends..they have all failed on me within the first 40K of miles. i had to replace most with moog/ timkin/ and kyb so they will last a lot longer than OE. overall the cobalts suck imo, but its up to you. on the plus side i get 36mpg, thats the only thing i like about the car

unless he is paying for the car, don't get a chevy/saturn/olds as they are all identical cars with different badges. If he is paying for it then go with the cobalt as it is better than the cavalier, but it's still not good.

sounds like you have your heart set. so never mind on civics then. so I say get an older sports car then. Z, Camaro, Mustang, take your pick. why drive boring when you can have style and performance
