dont expect to get a job at a dealership or a name brand place.

but i woudlnt be surprised if a mom and pop shop hired someone who was competent but not certified.

Either go to school or start as a lube tech. If you really love cars though don't become a mechanic. Get a good job that pays for your hobby and work on cars for fun.

ya no, i'm going to college and getting a degree in Mechanical and Energy Engineering so i wouldnt plan on becoming a mechanic. would trying to find an internship/apprenticeship/assistant type job be hard to find? like i dont mind not even being paid for a while as long as i will later when im trained

That means very little in my experience. Everybody knows people that have certs but can't be trusted to change wiper blades, thus the certs' value is somewhat diluted in the yes of most.

That's true, I never got a single ASE and started at top pay at the dealerships I worked at, but I also knew what I was doing. You could easily BS your way into a job but if you roll in with a Husky box and take 5 hours to do a 60k you will be gone fast, as well as make no money on flat rate.

They won't waste the time an effort to train you, even if you work for free. It takes years to get up to speed from scratch.

You are grossly understimating the skill and knowledge required to be a mechanic.

Suppose not. I think they paid lube techs $13-15 an hour or so at the dealerships I was at, I live in a rich area though. A smaller shop though you will probably be the shop bitch as well, and get paid less. Just write a cover letter and a resume and send it to every nice dealership in your area, can't hurt. You could be a valet or parts runner too if you have a clean driving record.

Yeah, they gave them 2 racks so they always had something going. They were also the racks right in the front where the customers drove up, and could see their cars from the waiting room, so they couldn't fuck around at all. Still good money for such easy work I suppose, but there's easier to ways to get paid the same amount and not have to deal with asshole service writers that want you to swap a set of runflats on 20"ers in 10 minutes.
