All premium fuel does is take a higher temperature to autoignite. Nothing else.
So if your car has a high compression engine and you use too low a grade of fuel, especially in hot weather, it may get hot enough to ignite the fuel before the spark plug fires, which can damage the engine. Most modern engines will either richen the mixture or pull the timing to cool the engine or reduce air pulled in to prevent detonation. However, this costs efficiency and performance.
If your car has a lower compression ratio, it makes absolutely no difference which fuel you use. Premium fuel will not damage any engine. It might burn a little less completely at low temperatures, but probably not enough to notice.
