The only reason you see so many diesel cars in Europe is because the governments there decided to tax diesel less than gasoline. Because when they built their oil refineries, the designed them to turn crude into a higher ratio of diesel to gasoline than anywhere else. Anywhere that gas and diesel are taxed about the same, gas is cheaper, and thus almost nobody drives a diesel car.
Personally, I think non-commercial diesel vehicles should be banned in the US, in order to save fuel for trains, large trucks, military and agricultural vehicles.
