17 years ago today one of the greatest drivers to ever get behind the wheel died. R.I.P. Ayrton Senna, F1 would never be the same before or after you

It's a bummer, he could have won a lot more podiums. LOL that he was complaining that Schumacher was "somehow" using driver aids once they were taken away

I'm a huge ignorant regarding race car drivers. What did Senna do to be so badass? Aggresive driving? Balls of steel? Great driving technique?

There were races that he won by more than a minute, despite his team mate having a nearly identical car, his ability to qualify was probably what he was best known for though.

>>4632870 He lapped everybody but 1 person (Prost, I think, his team mate, and the reigning world champion) during one Monaco GP.
And in the rain? He was even better. Lesser men would brake earlier, and drive slower.
Watch the 2.5 hour long documentary, Senna: Beyond the Speed of Sound. You can find it on the interbutts, or you can buy it (Not sure if there's a NA release). There's subs on the interbutts for the non-English parts. I recommend it.

he's also part of the reason honda has such a good reputation for racing engines, while he was on team McLaren, many considered him to have been a honda driver, with a McLaren chasis

>>4632870 he was a fast driver who intentionally wrecked people on the track and generally drove recklessly. then he died and became overly idolized because he was dead and everybody jumped on the senna bandwagon. in b4 "but all of those race car drivers in the interviews said he was one of the best?!?!?" well, what the fuck do you expect them to say in a public interview?
in many ways hes basicaly the same as MSC except mikey isnt dead so everybody can hate him.

however: stefan bellof, in the only non-turbo car, was .5 of a second faster than senna.
bellof > senna. but then, there were lots of better drivers than senna

>>4632870 He drove the FW16 in 1994 and won the pole in every race he was in, even though it's handling was so bad that almost everyone that was driving in F1 knew about it at the time. He also almost won the 84 monaco grand prix, in his rookie year, on his first road course race, in heavy rain, and in a very uncompetitive car. The only reason he didn't win was that prost, who was in the lead and being caught at something like 4 seconds a lap by senna, was waving his hands like mad to get the race stopped. Senna ended up getting 3 podiums in his toleman that year, also the only 3 podiums toleman ever achieved.

Remember what happened at McLaren with Alonso and Hamilton? same situation, Prost shoulda left McLaren sooner. That being said he did phenomenally well given how much his team liked his team mate over him

>>4632991 I do not recall where I read this, but there has been some speculation that the FW16 was designed before active suspension was banned. Also, the Imola race was the first for some changes the Williams team made to the FW16 (wheelbase extended, sidepods changed, and a few other things I do not recall ATM). Senna had his car set up on the 'ragged edge': controllable, but only just.

The F1 cars were trully beautiful pieces of engineering back then. And now it's just a bunch of twisted pieces of carbon fiber where the shape justifies its function disregard any bad visual aspects this better aerodynamic pursuit can cause. I think F1 cars should had a balance between aerodynamic and a clean/nice acceptable look...

>>4635309 >race car >cares about looks Get back to Speedhunters and go jack off to drift cars, you ricer fuck. Race cars aren't built to look good, they're built purely to perform to the best of their current abilities within the rule set. If you want anything else, then you're watching the wrong sport.

Senna was a dick. Purposely crashing other racers = not fucking cool. He should have been thrown out of F1. Yeah, I know he was gifted, but that shit is like having a great bodyguard that thinks nothing of taking shots at the people he works with.
