>>4635031The entire race was mismanaged, if you think about it. In addition to not stopping the race after Pedro Lamy rear-ended J.J. Lehto's car at the start, they chose the absolute worst pace car to lead the field around under yellow (an Opel, Vauxhall, or some other shitbox; I don't remember). The brakes on the damn thing were cooked after not even one lap, and as a result, the driver of the pace car had to go slower than he would have liked, lest he fly off the course from lack of brakes. If I remember correctly, the pace car driver said at a hearing that Senna actually pulled alongside the pace car a couple times and expressed his displeasure at the slow speed. The real irony is that there WAS a far more capable pace vehicle sitting in the paddock at the time: a Porsche 911 Carrera RSR. Why it was not used that is a mystery to me.
After the accident, too, there were critical mistakes made that should not have happened. For instance, the fact that it took a safety team 2 minutes to reach the scene of the crash. 2 whole minutes. In these kinds of situations, 2 minutes may as well be an eternity. Granted, knowing what we know now, it probably wouldn't have made much of a difference even if they had gotten there right after the accident occurred, but still, it was a serious lapse in safety, though it was relatively tame compared to what had happened in the past (Ricardo Palleti, anyone?).
