my car is a hunk of shit and i am selling is as a parts car for like $1500. I have another $1500 saved up, so I will have about $3k (and growing) to work with.

I figure for my price range, i can either get a P.O.S. used car, or a decently nice used bike, so I am looking.

I have always liked the idea of having a motorcycle, but never had the necessity to get one..

What is the smallest bike I should be looking at? I am 6'6 tall and about 280lbs. im a big dude, so whats the smallest size engine i should look for?

suggestions of brands to look for and stay away from? any advice/help would be appreciated.

People here will tell you to start with a weak ass 250cc. I started with a 1000cc and I had no issues.

And being that you're huge, you'll need a more powerful engine.

I'm not going to recommend anything because I'm extremely biased.

could someone as big as me even ride a 250cc? really man, im on limited funds. the Honda Rebel bikes start at like $4000 new, and in a month or so, i might have enough money to even buy one of those, instead of a used bike. i just thought it wouldnt be big enough (engine wise)

I do NOT want some huge hoking fucking bike, like my dad has a 2004 honda shadow spirit, that thing is gigantic. i want something smaller in physical size.

the clutch on my 2000 VW Passat needs to be replaced, as do two of the front axle bearings ($125 ea.). shop wants $1100 for parts alone. I do not want to put more money in to that car, it has had problem after problem ever since i bought it a year and a half ago. i have kept up with standard maintenence..

honestly you can find 600cc sport bikes that were laid over for cheap. same thing with 750cc cruisers.

having it being layed over lowers the price by alot.

just make sure it still runs well though.

Get a 650cc+ dual sport or a supermoto.

The often recommended ninja 250 would have problems with you powerwise, it'll still haul you around, but you won't be comfortable on it, or most standard or sport bike for that matter. You can probably mess with bar raisers and lower rearsets, but I'd imagine you don't want to fuck with those yet. I'm sure there are probably sprts bike that fit tall people, but I've only looked at bikes that fit me (5'6"). Offroad/dual sport/supermoto are another matter though.

KLr650, DR650, XR650 would be the ones you can find in the 3K range (if you're lucky or if they are fucking old) and will be cheap and chips to insure (provided you have a clean record) though you'll also want to leave some money for gear.

Shit, you could buy NEW gear for a lot less than people usually say. Yeah, you could say "but I need the best because I can't put a price on my body", but unless you buy some shitty never heard of brand, you will be fine. A DOT helmet, Jacket, and gloves can be had for less than 300 bucks, even less if you look around. There are closeouts on gear all year round, as long as you're not "I gotta have the blue ones!" .

You can pick up an EXO-700 for 100 bucks now a days, or you can pay for a super duper shoei or arai or whatever. Same with jackets, you don't need the ICON DOMAIN AIRFRAME WARMASTER EDITION STREETFIGHER jacket, just pick up something that is made by a reputable company for 100-150 bucks and you'll be fine.

As for registration and insurance I can't say as it depends on different factors, but if you have to submit a title in your state or whatever, see if you can get the seller to agree to put a lower amount on the title so you don't have to pay as much (ie I'll pay 500 bucks for the bike, and I'll give you an extra 2000 just because I like you!)
