Just throwing it out there.. I was really impressed with the sharpening technique you showed yesterday on that portrait of the guy, but I couldnt quite understand it with all the terminology. It would be awesome to see a video where you did a full edit on a portrait, or maybe a couple of videos showing the different sections.

Also, please speak with a clear voice, the number of youtube tutorials where the speaker is mumbling is absolutely horrendous, and talk through the menu's that you go through to select a tool, maybe not through the whole vid, but the first time you use a particular tool in the video would be a nice touch.

OP here, what you are doing is greatly appreciated. I learn much better with step by instructions that I can see and follow. What you are doing could greatly improve my PP skills and my photography overall. The effort you have put in already to give it a go is greatly appreciated. I'm sure you will get a pretty good following rather quickly from us here at /p/ hopefully it can be somewhat profitable for you down the track with youtube.. that is until you reach your endgame and none of us can afford you.

I don't mean to be rude, but you need to pick up the pace in part 1 in the future. I mean maybe others here will disagree, but once you've demonstrated the key techniques and whatnot of an exercise, go ahead and fast forward until you get to a part where you have reason to start talking again. You don't have to cut the video and skip ahead, necessarily, just advance at like 2 or 3x speed. We'll still see what you do, but we won't be forced to sit through the tedium of you doing it for like 5 minutes.

It's like you're teaching us how to sweep the floor. You show us and tell us and we see a few sweeps. But we don't need to watch every single sweep you make until you like... Get to the corner of a room or something and you need to teach us something again.

But otherwise so far this tutorial is pretty great. I've always felt that I didn't use adjustment layers to their full potential, and seeing it used this way confirms that.

I actualled liked the slower pace, I wasn't in a rush to finish watching I enjoyed being able to watch it without having to pause or go back so I'm guessing the speed is just preference, I really liked the speed you were at.

Since this is a "let's ask Photoshop®)" thread.. what do you suggest for workflow, do you use Lightroom to actually import your files and turn them into jpegs before going further in Photoshop.. and if so, what adjustments do you do at this stage? Or, would you just do the RAW -> jpeg conversion in Photoshop itself?

I'm a bit confused as to what to do, advice (from anyone really) is appreciated.

So what exactly would you (just addressing everyone who has more experience than me really) do as part of the RAW conversion.. just a bit of white balance correction, or would you do some curves/levels... or leave all that for Photoshop, and the "RAW conversion" really is just that? Or, of course, does it not really matter and it's just either/or?

I'm not Photoshop(R) but I've been a staff retoucher for a studio for years now.

We use lightroom 3 exclusively for raw conversion.

- Shoot raw
- import to LR3
- do most "overall" changes to an image, like WB, exposure, B&W conversion, noise reduction, etc. in LR3
- export to full-size jpg
- retouch the jpg in photshop and final touches

I'm not sure if C1 is better or worse since I've never used it, but I know LR3 becomes very valuable due to its fantastic noise reduction features. Doing some wedding shots that come in shot @ 3200 or something, LR3 is a LIFESAVER.

well, non destructive editing in photoshop is kind of tricky. You can do it via adj. layers, but for that you need to save a huge psd. In LR3 you just save the metadata, the xmp, and you're all set. And anyone with that file and LR3 can just load your xmp and see every single change you made to that image.

Just on the subject of xmps, I accidentally deleted some of the photos out of my LR2 library the other day, and when I re-imported them I couldn't get any of the changes to come back. Xmps were all in the right folder, same filenames as the images etc.. anyone know why this might be?

EXIF data is various information on how/when the picture was take..
XMP files are used for RAW adjustments...
most RAW editing is non-destructive, any raw adjustments you do is saved in the XMP with the same file name as the RAW file...
at least that's how it's like in Photoshop.

I only learnt what masking was the other day. But I still have no idea how to use it, do it or what it can do: I just know what it *is*, so I'd love to learn more about the digital darkroom process and how I can give my photos more kick.

In terms of paying for the videos, I would personally probably just go elsewhere to look for free ones, as much as I'd like to contribute to your work. There are so many good ones online, you'd have to offer something quite unique. But that's just my opinion. I'm a poorfag student, so take that into account, too.

This might seem obvious, but if you choose to take payment for videos, have one as a demo/sample. So many places that charge for these kinds of services have no proper demo (a 30 second clip doesn't count, I mean an entire episode) that it gives no information about what it is they're selling.

Don't underestimate the amount of money you can make being a partner on youtube. of course it will take a while but could be done. I forget the username but there is a photoshop guy on youtube already that makes horrible horrible tutorials and has partner on youtube nd quite a lot of views. people won't bother pirating your shit because its free to watch and you will still make bank.

That said if you were to become popular on youtube (with your amount of skill that wouldn't be hard) it would be a good place to advertise your dvd/website or w/e

Realistically, if every asshat with photoshop asked you for advice then you'd be incredibly busy and overwhelmed, heh.

Two nagging problems I have are doing things tastefully (not overdoing an effect -- I feel in this one, after seeing it completed, that I over-smoothed the skin), and not knowing what to do next.

Image is cropped and resized to keep it reasonable.

Just remember to advertise in the right places - for instance, try advertising at The Online Photographer. Their audience is pretty old and well-off, meaning they'll rather buy than pirate, and their advertising rates are pretty low. (I know this because I'm thinking about advertising with them for a project of mine, I have no financial interest in them otherwise etc.)

I'd be glad to help, for sure, only I'm not -exactly- sure what you mean? Could you be more specific perhaps?

Some things that come to mind:
- I have some global adjustments (no detail really, just affecting the entire image) that reduce the greyness and up the contrast a bit - this has the most affect on the 'lighting' of the image, I'd say.
- I worked with the eyes and mouth to make them darker compared to the skin, which gets a good contrast.
- I tried to smooth out and work the shadows a bit using burn and dodge layers in the style show in Photoshop®'s youtube video.

I used dodge and burn to adjust the shadows - I basically wing it based on looking at the image and thinking that this or that could be lighter or darker, I don't really have a process for it.

Dodge layer is on the left, and I superimposed it over the image itself to show where it comes into effect.

Picture attached is original image, with a strip in the middle showing it with the global adjustments.

It's all actually pretty subtle but works together really nicely.

I am also not Photoshop (R)
but I can give you tutorials about most features of Photoshop Lightroom, which is pretty much ACR with a nicer interface and a catalog and exporting system

PS LR is for recolouring, etc.

I can also help you with most of the settings in "Adjustments" for PS CS5, I can help you with layers, putting heads on people's bodies if that's what you want, the puppet tool, ect

My biggest lifesavers are PS LR as a whole (half of my pics are from a £129 4-year old compact I used to use), selection tool with refine edge, curve correction, puppet warp, leyers

anyway my friends at school say I am "sick" at photoshop
