iv'e sold a few & had 1 published.
i know i need to make a decision about doing this for a living or keeping it a hobby... but some of you guys are a LOT younger than i am and have a chance to make a career out of taking photos.
listen- i'm kinda locked in to my shitstain of a life with a wife & kids and a business to run.. but a lot of you still have time to do something you love before you get stuck.
if you're 25 & under, have no major responsibilities & can deal well with people... fuckin do it.
stop working a shit job & eat some ramen for a couple months until you get in the groove.

if i had started this seriously at 25, i would be a very happy man today.

I moved on to another photographer, who'd give me $300 a day to shoot on my own. I stayed there for a few months, doing heaps of shit weddings, making mistakes with people who didn't give a fuck, while improving my work.
I left him to work for an even better photographer, getting $300 a day to assist, and after a while I was getting $500 a day to shoot weddings on my own for her.
Now I'm in the process of doing my own weddings, my prices started at $750 for my time/not including albums/prints etc, now I'm charging $1500 for my work.
It takes time, but like he says, if you enjoy it, it isn't work.

*Mike Johnston of TOP once wrote that Michael Reichmann, the talentless fuck behind Luminous Landscape, comes from a fucking rich family and that photography was basically just a hobby he got into and started making money of. The difference to everyone else being that he had an enormous amount of start-up capital. Of course, he wrote it in a much more subtle and kind way, but that's the gist of it.
Bonus points for speaking German and associating Reichmann's surname with his status.

You don't need a tripod and other gear to enjoy photography, and any photographer that can't enjoy making photographs with just one camera and two lenses should stop and think for a second why it is that he likes doing photography at all. There's subjects all around you, you don't need to travel to enjoy or to make great photographs. Heck, being in your own city has some clear advantages, of knowing what is going on and knowing people that can get you places, instead of going to a foreign country and taking the more obvious shots. Faggots spilling vodka over my camera during one of my (rare) paid prestation at a club and then running away, fucking random street dog jumping on my camera, breaking my 28-80 (minolta and cheap as fuck, but still), etc etc. In the end, my shutter button is stuck halfway, my sensor is dirty as fuck (should get it cleaned, but I live in the shittiest city ever, no camera stores in a 20km radius), and my flipscreen is nearly off my camera.
Really, I've enjoyed taking shots with a fujifilm HD-M, which is a really horrible camera, but I can't make money without working, in good shape gear, and I can't get it without money. It's a vicious circle :(

Don't be a jack of all trade, it makes you look bad. Specialize in something, senior portraits, group events, building interiors, etc. It makes it sound like you know your shit and that your an expert, an expert can doing everything that jack of all trade photographer could do, and more.
