I recently bought a t2i, and only have a kit lens. I have acquired a few hundred US monies to buy a new lens, but I'm torn between which type of lens I should buy first. I want to get a decent telephoto zoom lens (not the professional kind), but I also want to get a prime lens. Which should I buy first? Also, which kind of lens should I buy. I was thinking 50 mm 1.8 for street photography and portrait pics, but I like travelling and wanted to get a 70-300 telephoto cause I think it would be handy to have. Any advice?

about $300 right now. I can save up more for a more expensive lens and am willing to shell out about 400-500 max for a decent telephoto to get me by. Since I'm a poor college student, I just want to get decent lenses, and once I get a stable income, I'll go for more expensive glass. I just want something that functions well and has a decent price atm.

telephotos for that price are not very good

You can get a great 35 f2 for about 300 though.

Canon 50mm 1.8
Canon 75-300 USM

I got both of these used for $100, you can buy them new for under $300 for both.

I got them both for $100 total, which was kinda a steal. Even if you buy them new you can get both for under $300 total.

I'd check around for used stuff first if you live in or next to a high population area. Craigslist is great, I don't think I would buy a lens from ebay since I want to hold the lens before I buy it.

I only use B&H when I buy new stuff. They are the cheapest 99% of the time.

For the money, the sigma 70-300 APO isn't bad (the non APO version is horrid), but for $500 I'd look for a used 70-200 f4L or 70-300 IS

Ok, I'll pay attention to your advice. What would a good lens be then if I wanted to take pictures of tourist sites/buildings and whatnot when I travel. I figured one that didn't zoom that far would catch some unnecessary objects in the periphery but I'm not looking for some professional quality images here.

Bring your camera with you when you go to check out the lens you want to buy. Besides looking down the glass and checking for any fuzz/damage, you'll want to put it on your camera and take a few shots just to make sure everything works.

Oh, and is it bearable that you don't have IS? I don't have the steadiest hands, so I'm a bit worried about dayshots, especially if there isn't much light out.

Really, depends on your style of shooting. Since I've taken a liking to shooting street, I enjoy using 50mm equivalent prime lenses. (I also don't mind using my feet as "zoom").

If you think that you're gonna constantly gonna be blocked off by barriers in tourist areas, then maybe a tele might not be a bad idea after all. (Hell, maybe even the kit 18-55 might fit your bill as well).

General guide to getting stable images is having a shutter speed that matches your focal length. Slowest shutter for 300mm = 1/300 second, slowest shutter for 200mm = 1/200 second, etc.

Higher focal lengths + low light + no IS = you may struggle with clean images.

It's for a full frame. You have to multiply your focal length by your sensor's crop factor to calculate slowest shutter speed.

Every canon user should have an EF 50mm 1.8 I'm pretty sure its the cheapest lens canon makes, and its amazing at its price. nice fast aperture for $100, can't beat that

if you really want to go all out get the 50mm or 85mm 1.2L All around more quality lens

Didn't really know that. Been going off those general rules for quite some time now on my cropped rabal and I've found myself getting some pretty stable shots at night with 1/20 on a 50mm.

no, it's about the image size, and the image size is still the same. on ef-s lenses, you don't actually, literally have the cropped region like when using ef lenses, but the idea is still the same. for 50mm the guideline is at least 1/50 regardless of whether you have crop or full frame.

No it's not.

The guideline is based on an enlarged-to-normal-viewing-size image. With a crop sensor, you're effectively enlarging the image a bit extra by that crop factor, so you need to multiply that rule of thumb by your crop factor.

If the crop factor weren't an issue, you'd be able to handhold, say, a Canon s5is at its full 400mm+ equiv extension at 1/70th without IS turned on. That's clearly absurd.

get an ebay adapter (ef to nikon) and buy a nikon 28mm f1.8 prime for 40 dollars. Then get a tamron 18-200 for 190 used. I also paid 50 for a nikon 50mm prime.... much better way to go. I have the t2i as well. Use it mainly for tha vidz.

You could always buy an old lens and an adapter for your eos body. I just bought a 50mm olympus OM f/1.4 for 85 buvks and an adapter for 10 more dollars. While the lens is essentially manually operated an eos specific piece of glass of that quality would run me about 500 bucks.
