If it helps, I recently started learning studio lighting, and really in to B/W high and low key portraiture. My subjects are people--usually one or two people holding yoga poses.

Is two lights too much? I have a Nikon SB600, but I've found that it isn't enough light for me.

in my opinion, you are better off gettin 1 AlienBee B1600 with stand and umbrella. if you are starting off, it's better to see all you can do with just one light. Buy (or download) Zack Arias' OneLight tutorial. You will learn to be creative and get great results with just one direct source, using bouncers, different setups, etc. Besides you'll be buying a better product. Save up, and after a few month get the Alien Bee (B800) as a fill or second light. I did it that way. I now own the B1600 and the B800, various amazon.com modifiers, I use my speed light when needed. I am planning on buying 2 of the really cheap (50-60dlls) Adorama Flashpoint lights just for background. Trust me, I started with a cheap 3 light setup from eBay and ungraded in around 4 months.

That depends on how you much you care about appearance and durability. If you want to make one to play with - duct tape and black craft foam work fine, but don't expect it to look remotely professional.

I own a monolight from this brand and it works very well for me. Though if you have the money, definitely go with something like an Alien Bees setup. They are better build quality, faster recycle (though flashpoints aren't terrible) and the modeling lamp adjusts with the power selector. But I've had mine for almost two years now and used it in weddings, studios and even location shoots. It works well! Also, definitely buy two. It'll take some time to get used to using them, but once you learn how to get it right, you'll love it.

This guy has the right idea. Buy higher quality stuff from the beginning, even if it means having to piece together your equipment over time instead of getting it all at once. Don't learn the hard way about how expensive repeatedly replacing 'cheap' equipment can get over time.

thirded. Buy some alienbees. I work with a b800 and a b400 at my work (i do some product photography for an industrial design company) and they're great.
You can even buy this little battery pack to use them where ever you want.

They'll last you a long time too, and they're light and cheap.
The only complaint I have with the alienbees series is that they all have this rinkydink 40mm fan on the bottom to move air.. If they had used a 120mm fan it would be silent like you wouldn't believe, but they didn't... oh well. Can't have everything I suppose. maybe one day I'll draw up some plans to mod the light to use a 120 mm fan on the side.

It'll start you off nicely, won't limit you to the studio and when you really start needing dedicated studio strobes you can put down some money on some quality lights.

Until you get a full setup you can easily use the speedlites in their place, in conjunction with studio strobes.
