Hey /p/
I'm trying to decide whether to buy an original 5D or 1Ds Mark ii. Theres only about $400ish price difference between them on some sites.
The size and the weight of the 1-series doesn't worry me.

I mostly shoot small products/portraits in the studio, landscapes and travel photography.

Just wondering if /p/ has had an experience with the 1Ds mark ii and 5D?
and if i buy used from the US and have to service or replace the shutter in Australia will Canon Australia accept a US body?

same questions, same answers. in the end if you can afford a 1D, buy a 1D. if you can't, get a 5D. simple as that. they are both great cameras and will capture studio, landscapes and travel photography all the same.

and as for canon australia, all canon bodies are generally the same. they can replace the shutter if you want to with not much trouble.

I have experience with both, and can say that the primary difference that you will find in general use is the focusing. The focus system in the 1DsII blows the 5D away, and is worth the extra money. This also applies to manual focus, so if you are planning on using Zeiss, m42 or F-mount lenses, then you should get the 1DsII.

Other than that, you have a whole bunch of nit-picky things that don't really matter as much as the pixel peepers want you to believe, so if you are just going to be using Canon brand USM lenses with a ST-E2 or 580 doing AF-assist, then you should get the 5D.

Really? I usually see 5Ds going for around $1000 and 1DsIIs going for around $2000. Are you finding really good deals on the 1Ds Mk II, or really shitty deals on the 5D?

I also use both, and can back up what>>1252188and>>1252194say. The 1ds is a lot more bulky, though you don't care. Also the controls are a little counter-intuitive but once you get the knack it's fine. The 5d is a lot more finicky about it's focusing, definitely.

I've got access to a 5D and a 1D Mark iii so i might try them out for weight and size for the day but at the moment i'm leaning towards the 1DS Mark ii over the 5D.
I also own a EOS 3 so i'm pretty used to the 45 point AF and controls etc

5D = $850 with some looking.
1Ds II = $1600

Where are you finding this low cost 1Ds2?

quit crying about the dial. The dial sucks once you get used to the buttons and who changes modes so often. But be aware that the button config is pretty weird on the II (push this, hold that etc), you'll have to get used to that, but if you don't know the 1D III or IV intimately you'll live. Good thing is that no one will be able to work out how to use it.

I use a 1D IV every day and have been using them since the 1D II and they aren't too heavy. Glass weighs more.

Af in the 1Ds is about four hundred millions times better than the 5D II. So I'd get it.

Different, maybe, but not harder. You change the mode the same way you change ISO, which is to press a button and spin the dial. Not a BFD.

I used one recently. ohshitson. 5D3 has a lot to answer for, because it isn't going to take much at all to make me jump to Nikon when they release the D800.
