Anything pretty much with a adjustable lens.

What about something around the 2-300 dollar range? Are compacts worth getting? I am not a photographer, I just want to take high zoom, high resolution pictures with great quality. A $500+ DSLR is kind of a waste of money for me.

High resolution isn't important unless you're making giant posters so ignore the MP count, also high zoom AND high quality is almost impossible in your price range, for what you're looking for I'd recommend the Canon SX130 which has decent quality and a decent zoom, or if you can go up in price a little and live with a shorter zoom there's the Canon S95 (normally $400, though I saw it at adorama the other day for $350) which is pretty much the best compact camera you can get right now though an SLR will still shit all over it in image quality.

d5000 is an entry level
i would recommend d90. (or d80) you will gain:
- internal focusing motor = wider range of available lenses
- DoF preview
- master for nikon flashes
