If you get a Giottos screen cover fot the M8, its all you need. The shutter and frameline updates are $1k each or more.
Leica is apparently prepared to service the cameras for a long time. word is that the ones that have had the shutter replaced are generally solid. At some point, an M9 will drop low enough that if your M8 dies, it might be worth an upgrade.
Again, the M8 is more of a purchase about enjoyment of photography than tryimg to maximize dollar for dollar performance. If you plan to use it for under 30k frames, a used M4,5,6 and commercial scanning/development is actually more cost efficient.
