I finally got my tax return and finally have extra cash to get into my photography hobby. I'll be getting $1000 back and will be spending this all on getting equipment to get me started. I've done some searching and reviewing and have compiled a list of equipment that should be suitable to get me going. Please let me know what you think of my choices. I'm new to digital photography so your feedback is very much appreciated.

I'd hold off on that accessory kit and buy a quality bag after you get the camera. Take it with you, try out different bags and find something nice. Get a decent tripod too - not an 'accessory kit' tripod or a walmart tripod. Get Sandisk instead of Transcend for the sake of dependability. Ditch the filters. Get a solid hood instead of rubber.

Basically... just get the camera and the lens. I can understand not wanting to spend a ton on accessories - but if you buy cheap shit that isn't quite as good as what you had hoped - you're stuck buying all of it a second time.

I'd say get the T2i instead. For the types of photos you're wanting to take a 50mm f/1.8 is pretty much useless, as on a crop sensor it's very narrow and more appropriate for portrait type pictures. But for its price it's something to still consider.

Considering you want to take long exposure night photography you want a camera that has pretty good noise performance, (ergo you want the T2i over the t3). You will require a tripod, but i'd search for an older used one, they were just built better in the past, especially when comparing with cheap modern ones.
You'll do fine with the Kit-lens for now, as you're going to want to shoot mostly wide-angle anyway, and a faster lens isn't really required for long exposure night photography when you're going to be stopping down to f/8 or more.
So my recommendation would be:

Canon EOS T2i with 18-55mm IS.
Tripod
Sandisk memory card (Class 6 or higher required for HD video) 4-8GB will be more than enough to start with.
You'll also want a remote trigger, do not buy official canon triggers, they're way overpriced and you can buy cheaper third party equivalents on amazon. Canon doesn't even make an intervalometer trigger compatible with the E3 connector on the T2i, while third parties do. I got a Intervalometer, identical to look and functionality to canons, albeit with an E3 plug for 30bucks compared to 170 if i bought canons (which wouldn't have worked unless i replaced the connector with some soldering action)

Also, the only filters you really need are a Circular Polarizer, a Hoya would be good, bit expensive maybe. And perhaps something like a 3stop neutral density filter if you want to do long bulb exposures at like dusk/dawn.

It seems decent, but unless you really want/need a flippy screen, there's really no need to get the t3i over the cheaper t2i, since they are virtually identical. Both share same sensor (also same as 60D and 7D) Same processor on both etc. Only advantages the t3i has is a digital crop zoom feature in video mode, some creative filters and support for wireless speedlite (flash).

I think for your budget, it would be better to get a Tamron 50mm f/1.4. It's half a stop quicker and about the same price as the Canon 1.8.

well. my sis was able to pitch in with some cash. so i didnt have to worry about coming up short. but now i know she's going to want to borrow it for her kid's glamor shots. so now i'm gong to have to learn about outdoor portrait taking in daylight. then i'm going to have to teach her about it. i didnt buy the warranty and now i am going to have to worry about her kids breaking my camera.
