What is a good gift for an amateur photographer? I've Googled to no end, but I'm not sure if the recommendations are really that great or not. I'd like to hear opinions from some actual photographers.
Any suggestions are appreciated!

You cant get equipment-gifts for photographers, really, it's too expensive :(

Get a Josef Koudelka book, I'd love getting something like that.

Good tripod
Extra batteries
Speedlight
Remote shutter release

lots of shit yo all pretty affordable (speedlight being the most expensive, entry level speedlight is about the same price as a good entry level tripod tho)

I'd suggest photo books too, either a good book on composition (the more advanced stuff, I assume he's got the basics down).

Or a small collection of handy stuff, like a white balance card, lens tissues, flash gels and storage cards.

yeah dude photography is not a cheap hobby. Depends on how low you wanna go. whether its books or memory cards,etc

Think this is situation where honestly you don't wanna spend alot but still wanna give a good gift. Hard in this situation not the greatest metaphor but imagine someone into expensive cars and you wanna give them a book on mercedes benz

Like a pair of socks they will go gee thanks. Not sure you can really win in this situation by fact that real photography equipment costs lots of cash

Akin to someone into good cognac that costs 100s and you decide to get a bottle of cheap hennessy VS for 30 bucks

Agreed maybe find out something else the person is into like music? cds,etc If money is an issue

Real photography equipment like lens, cameras,etc real stuff i use cost too much to be casual gifts unless your name ends in gates or jobs

The person will be stuck with cheap stuff that they won't use

Oh Jeez, I'm glad I still had this thread up in a tab.
I have a bunch of friends who are very similar in their use of cameras and what stuff they have, and I asked them and they said they'd like camera magazines that have tips and tricks and things like that, or that tripod that wraps around things.
Damn expensive photographer stuff. D:

I'm a guy, and she's a girl by the way.

I second books. I'm always leafing through photo books at Books-A-Million, but can never justify spending ~$30+ on a book instead of something useful.

If she's an amateur a 'how-to photography' book is OK, if she's advanced, just get a big book full of photographs.

A bunch of self-published books by other photographers or one really nice book of images by a well known would be up my alley. How to books are boring.

lenses and cameras are big gifts. my girlfriend is sleeping, but if i could control her next 3 gifts to me i would choose another battery, another memory card, or another cheap flash and/or rf trigger reciever. <-- all $50 or less

can't tell what kind of photographer she is, so i'm just going personally, but i think books or small creative nudges with inexpensive items will be most effective.

I think a book or two sounds like a good idea!
I'll probably go into the city soon and check out the camera store that my other photographer friend likes to go to, and might even ask him to give me a hand otherwise I'll just ask the store people.

Yes, the next bunch of times I see her, I'll be discretely finding out what she might or might not need, asking her things that won't give anything away. I think I know what I'm doing.
