I want to upgrade from my d40x and I want something that's around 700-1000 dollars. any suggestions?
also trying to get a camera with at least one lens.
pic related camera i've been looking at but can't find a good one for a good price.

Do you already have some Nikon lenses? If so, get the D5100 body and maybe the 35mm DX or new 50mm AF-S prims

Since you already own a Nikon, You may want to consider staying withing their system. If you get a Canon, any Nikon lenses, etc you own won't be compatible. That also means that if you buy a Nikon, you can save some money by opting to not include the kit lens.

I'm actually a Canon guy, but just sayin'.

well it's actually my friends camera and he lent it to me with the kit lens and the 55-200mm lens. So I'll be giving it back to him and getting my own. also, I would like something canon, because after the d40x and seeing the d3100 I just don't really like either of them.

Make sure to go to a store and try a Canon first to make sure you like the layout better, if you find you don't have a preference I'd just go with Nikon so you can borrow your friend's lenses, but the comfort of the camera is important. If Canon T2i/T3i/50D, if Nikon D5100/D90

via canon loyalty program you can get a t2i with kit lens for $550 or so if you trade in a broken canon camera or a canon film slr ($10 on ebay) which is probably going to be the newest camera you can get for that amount of money. if you're fine with an older camera you can check craigslist or ebay for 30d/20d/10d or the older rebels.
