hey /p/ not quite sure if this is the right place to post this, but i'm a film student looking to get a camera. I don't have a regular camera or a film camera and i'm tired of having to book cameras from the school and all the paper associated with it (we use canon xh-a1's which I'm not too fond of anyway).

Anyway, I'm thinking about getting a Canon EOS 5D Mark II, as I've read that they are very good for not only still shots but also video recording. I have ~$3500 AUD saved up so far, and it would be nice to get a camera that can also take still shots as well. I'm just wondering what would be a good choice.

i am a film student and i got the 7D. But i have a much tighter budget. 5D is generally the way to go if you are wanting something exceptional. Reason i went 7D is because the sensor is closer to a film camera then the 5D, and generally is a bit cheaper, leaving me some money to buy a steady mount. something i really need for running shots.

OP, if your budget is tight look at Panasonic GH1's too. Not as good as the Canons for photography, but arguable every bit as good for video.

He's a film student. "Film student" implies motion picture film. An APS-C sensor like the 7D has is closer to 35mm *motion picture* film's size than the full-frame-still-35mm size of the 5D's sensor.

Yes it does. For a given aperture and field of view, a larger sensor size means a shallower depth of field.

35mm sensor in 5D=35mm
24mm sensor TIMES 1.6 in 7D=35mm

5D is obviously closer, cause it IS already 35mm.

35mm film is the same for both stills and movies, but the frame sizes projected on that 35mm-wide strip of film are different:

When shooting stills, we commonly run the film horizontally and use 24x36mm frames.

When shooting movies, the standard (although there are a bunch of variations) is to run the film vertically and use 22x16mm frames.

Canon's APS-C variant is 22.2x14.8mm. That's closer to 35mm motion picture film than full frame is.

Then again, 5Dm2 cropped to 2.35:1 is closer DOF wise to motion picture film shot with anamorphic 2x lens than APS-C without one.

I used the canon 5d mk II for a film project recently in the studio... It was really nice but as I wasn't used to filming with that camera (first time properly), I did struggle a little with minor issues (the lighting in live view completely changing after I pressed record, so I had to record to see what I was doing when changing the lighting, I wasn't sure if I was able to change the depth of field, wasn't able to correct colour balance on imovie so I probably should had done it in camera...) Do remember that as well as the camera, you need to pay more on top for the lens, and you won't be able to use the cheaper EF-S ones. You need to think carefully about the lens you want, in terms of perspective, but as you're doing film it'd probably be best to have a versatile zoom lens than several primes, but that's just me.

I use my 7D with a 24-70 f/2.8L and a 70-200 f/2.8L and the results are awesome.

Also, don't forget mic packs and lighting.

I remember when I had my 550D and I was hell-bent on getting the best glass and I forgot about mics, lighting etc
